I've done the masking tape and flat finish method. It works
quite well. Just make sure you apply a light coat
of the flat though. If you don't you will get an edge that
will stand out.

thank you all - I will give tape and flat finish a try - will probably mix some grime in as well, just a little...
...I did try the decal way before but I did not get the right effect
