oh mighty and wise proto-knowers, please hear my call  ;D

I'm trying to figure out what this is; I have a rough estimate when it was taken (based on me in the foreground) this has to be somewhen between 1983-1985.  The only reference I can find to #70 (currently reported at dollywood) refers to one based in the alaska area.  I have never been to alaska.  http://narrowmind.railfan.net/WPYR/jdtrue/jdtrue.html I don't think this is the same loco.

Any ideas?

thanks
John

AFAIK, the locomotive in the photo, which was built for the White Pass & Yukon, which starts in Alaska but is mostly in the Yukon, has been at Dollywood since the place was built. It was most definitely there in the mid-1980's. There is also a WP&Y locomotive at the Tweetsie in Blowing Rock, NC. And yes, the WP&Y still has an operable steamer, too.

I've never been to Dollywood or Tweetsie :(
I think this was taken in WA, OR, or CA, or lower British Columbia - Vancouver area, maybe Expo '86?

can't find any more pics (yet) about this trip.  the caption on the back says we just completed a trip...

thanks 3rdrail  ;D

I didn't scroll right and see the adult standing by the cab. That's not a narrow gauge engine, it's probably a logging 2-8-2. There have been many "tourist operations" in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California over the years, still are, but there's very little to identify the loation.
