Ore Dock

Here is one of the main reason for my layout.

I'm going to scratch build a timber ore dock. I'm got some plans to dock #3 at Allouez.

All I've got done so far have been testbuilds for final project which I'm guessing at about 10 yrs to build.
The Ore Dock will be 6ft long 6in wide and 8in high.

Enough of the talk here's some progress pics
to start we needed a jig

After making a couple we started standing and joining them

I ran into some problems with the cross bracing so I had to redo jig

I'll break this up a little

Cheers Warren

You're off to a great start.  How many support legs will you need to build?

Wow

I'm impressed already! one question, how long was dock #3?
CN's Port Arthur dock will be on my layout (fortunately it was concrete, but with a 1200 ft approach trestle :P

Looking forward to this one!

How about a old school rotary dumper for the dock

Like say from 1897:

Notice the people trying to stand still, must not be used to new fangled video cam corders  ;)

Hi Guys

amato1969 i need around 150 of them

Ryan87  The dock is around 1900ft without lead up trestle that would make it around 11ft so i'm compressing it to 6ft

qantaga  I've been using Watyll NGR black furniture stain but it's a little dark so I going to thin it down with some thinners. Still playing with final colour.

Chris333  Very nice but not for the dock would consider a module for that instead.

Cheers Warren

I'm going to invest in Atlas, and rake in some major $$$ when you buy about 10,000 ore cars for that dock  8)

You saw the 10/07 RMC with the Hulett construction article by Gary Lance I trust.

Awesome undertaking Warren.  Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Those are tight-bottoms though, aren't they? You'd need a rotary unloader. A big wood dock like this would need some sort of hopper ore car.

I deserve that too.

The master for resin cars is complete and I had Steve Funaro give me a quote for 250 of them while @ Timonium. If I do a resin kit that the builder must attach the brass details, paint and decal the car with included trucks & Z body couplers, I would be in the high teens. So, I have entered in negotiations with a US manf to have the G-39's injection molded, assembled, painted, pad printed (with 2 runs of 25 different #'s) with trucks and Z body couplers for the same price as resin. Better yet, I own the mold and EVERYTHING IS STILL MADE IN THE US!! The mold $$ are reasonable since the manf is now working with me as I am going to do thier brass details from now on. A mutual Back-Scratch! Matter of fact, they are already doing the prelim CAD for the mold to firm-up the price.

If/When the legal begals (theirs & mine) sign off, I will begin doing several cars that really need to be done in N. Sorry for the baby steps. I trust the manf, but I am new to the injection process and I am trying to cover all the bases before inking my money away. This project has been a huge learning process for me and the reason I will not mention the other cars until the molds are already made.

Yes, I am using said article.  I haven't actually started yet because I have yet to decide to do it all plastic or have some wood parts.  I can get nice, small wood for free since it is technically a maritime project as well as a railroad project.

Sounds cool.  Any way at all unpainted kits can be available, though?  I feel like some for Pholl Gual, and my biggest beef with RTR stuff is demolishing it while taking it apart to paint.
