Greetings,
started with an Ho Layout my dad built in the late 50's German Fleischmann locos and cars... Changed to N in the late 60's because we moved so much.  Now retired and am working on a bigger layout (modular of course... still afraid I will have to move it.)... found out about TheRailwire when I recently bought an 18 ton Climax kit from RandGust... coming along slowly... not sure if I want the gear motor... well I do but not sure I need it.  working on a dual theme for the layout... lumber and mining. I live in Sonora Ca. The Queen of the Southern Mine and regularly walk the old lumber RR routes. Love those 3 to 6% grades for hiking.  Layouts other theme is Germany.. Have some Arnold and Fleischmann steam.  Going to do the dual themes by having 2 sets of buildings...  Thanks already to Petesky for his clarifying drawing on Setting wheel gauge on the Atlas wrecks I a resurrecting. 2 down one to go... 2 bad shells and all frozen with oil goo from previous owners exuberant lubrication.  Next big project is to put DCC in My Shay.. again thanks for the tips.
will stay involved and have a few simple ideas to contribute.  you guys are intimidating.
Next time I will try pics.

Welcome to the Railwire jbliss, and I'm glad to know that you found my post handy.

No need to feel intimidated. We go easy on new members.
Besides, think of it not as intimidation but as better modeling through peer pressure.  :D

Hi my name is Walter-Joseph Grabowski and I just signed up about a week ago. I model N scale, mainly local Ontario CN/CP and some passenger too. I was very intrigued by the plethora of information that is shared on this forum. Love the shared comments about upgrading locomotives, dcc installs, customizing, and learning about cool new ways to resolve problems with N scale model trains. I hope to post about my adventures in upgrading older DC locomotives to modern DCC with ESU LokSound 5 decoders, etc. For now I sincerely hope to keep up with the forum and chime in when I can. Thank you!

Hi Guys,

I've just now realized that I've logged in some time ago and have apparently been lurking continuously for quite some time.... :|

I switched from HO to N scale back in the early 90's, was involved with the local (Vancouver BC) N-Trak club and got into custom painting for myself and then others through Pacific Scale Rail until a busy life, shifting interests and deteriorating eyesight lessened my involvement with the hobby. Fast forward 20 years, wearing glasses full time and still having my stash of Atlas / Kato locomotives and rolling stock, a collection of Peco turnouts and track along with diminished parental transportation obligations relit my interest and reentry back into the hobby.

I will say that though Locomotive prices haven't jumped too badly in that time, if you don't include DCC and sound almost everything else has, track, rolling stock, structures and used equipment has... DCC was just it's in it's infancy for N Scale requiring milled frames and intricate soldering, not my specialty... 3D printing was there but crude in comparison to the quality that I see being posted here and available online.

I lurked at the A board when it was up and the SNIFF, Sunday Night Foto Fun, posts gave me a great snapshot of current products and techniques. I was happy to find the Rail Wire and even some of the same A board modelers posting regularly, I was hooked, into lurking apparently.... more inspiration to get the old gear out of the rubbermaid tote...

I have made the great leap forward and started a 36 x 72" layout that is very nineties in construction, open grid frame with cookie cutter roadbed. A folded loop for more main line run and elevation changes. I even made another leap forward to DCC with an Digitrax Zephyr and one each of BLI's DCC / Sound steam and diesel offerings in my fave Great Northern road name... so cool to have onboard sound in N scale!

I'm looking forward to being more of a contributing member here rather than a continuous lurker... I'll need help with foam scenery, DCC programming, 3D printing, frame milling etc., etc., etc.

But for now I too can JFRTM!

Thanks for reading,
Brent

@NorthWestGN - welcome aboard. There's coffee on the potbelly in the corner, and snacks somewhere around here.  Get a Layout build thread going in Layout Engineering so we can see where you in your build.

To keep the riff raff at bay, you have to have a minimum number of posts to add photos.  I used to know what that was.

Thanks for the the link Peteski, I can transition to a continuous poster from a continuous lurker until I get to 25 posts then can upload photos to the gallery for a build thread in Layout Engineering Reports ;)
