already considering modifications

doesn't take long to want to make changes to trackplans - no matter how many times do run it on simulation, it never is the same as in hand.  i'm considering making some changes to give the layout a more prototypical feel - the Panhandle Division was a 2 track affair into Conrail and not having that 2nd track is obvious.

here is the as built:

and it is with the mods:

Don't fret.  Once you start actually operating trains, you'll discover modifications that will make said operations more fluid.  Be glad you're making these discoveries before a lot of scenery and permanent type wiring is done...

after the trackwork is in place, i typically move at glacial speeds (pre global warming).  i'm always tweaking here and there, but i usually do a fair job in the planning stages to limit the operational headaches.  these mods are strictly to capture the feel of the prototype - i have to have a 2 track main for it to really be the Panhandle in 1967.

you should have seen the plywood of my HO 4x8 growing up - swiss cheese had less holes.

4 track main, is that one main and 3 really long sidings?  it's the NKP, just 4 years into NW ;)

last night i modified the lead into the 2 track staging area and the lead to the warehouse district - now it resembles a 2 track main - i'll tackle the lead to the staging area later this week as time allows.

Why don't you add a crossover in the hidden staging right were it becomes "hidden" so you can do some easier switching moves in between operating sessions...

the hidden staging holds 7-9 cars plus cabin and loco.  what exactly am i going to be switching in such a limited space?

Sooooo does that mean the rest of your layout is just for show? Your hidden staging is the largest switching area you have on that layout! I'm sorry for thinking...  ::)

You might want to consider adding a cross-over at the end of the hidden staging on the right.  It would function essentially as an engine escape track. That would allow a train to head into staging, the engine could cut off from the train and run around it to restage for the next trip out.

The plan looks interesting.

Hmm, them staging tracks look like places to park trains to me ... (ie not a classification yard)
