There were five
early wreck casualties amongst the 77 B&O GP30's (6920, 6940, 6942, 6946, 6962).

I have photos of 6942 with 2 different B&O paint jobs.
That's interesting.  There's a lot of talk on the B&O Yahoo Group about these and I got the info off that group.  Figured the B&O fans there know best.

Not trying to say it's not true, just that a wrecked unit was in my area with two different paint jobs. Seems rare.

June 6, 1964

March 26, 1967

Neither taken by me, but both taken at Youngstown, Ohio.

Way to new(ish) for me, but GP30's do look cool  8)

Yeah, they need to take a look at the methods in the weathering forum, :P

Bummer.  Another opportunity missed.  At least the new ones won't look too much better than my old one!

You'd think that, with the advent of the internet, a researcher could spend just a few minutes (like I just did) and come up with enough reference material to get something right, or at least closer. OK, let's say that a too-wide hood was a gven they couldn't change; they could at least have made the number boards better proportioned and gotten the width of the grab irons right. Maybe they could have even added the sand filler (I believe that's what the square feature at the peak is) while they were at it (unless that's not on all units).

At least now I know there is a prototype for my crooked decaling!

Agreed on the number boards (Kato sucks on their EMD # boards - all too "skinny") and the grabs.

As for the hood being too wide, it matches all the hoods on Kato SD45, SD40, SD40-2, etc which are also too wide.

Those number boards stick out as way too skinny, not nearly tall enough. Makes the entire back look odd. Its hard to judge how wide it is by eye since the number boards are off so much, at least that's my 2 cents on the issue.

The easy way will be to wait and pull out the calipers once its released.
