Alright guys, don't barbeque me here, but I've always thought the GP30 was kind of an ugly ducking.  It looks like a tadpole from the top with that wide cab and narrow long hood.  Don't get me wrong, I love Geeps and SDs, especially GP38s and 40s, and my all-time favorite, the SD45.  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Although, with all new tooling, I may be tempted if they were to do one in SOO, since the WC used #700 in its beat up, faded condtion for years as helper power.

1200301 - N Dbl Pratt is finished and in final layout.
0200401 - Z Dbl Girder is finished waiting on final layout.
0200601 - Z Sngl Girder is finished waiting on final layout.

2300801 - HO PRR 4-Track Lines East Signal bridge is almost done.
2300803 - HO PRR 2-Track Lines East Signal bridge is done waiting on final layout.
The signal bridges have been adjusted to allow larger track spacing. 2.25 for HO and 1.25 for N. Both N & HO will be released together.

1200??1 - N 90ft Deck Girder w/ side walkways & railings is done waiting on final layout.
1200??3 - N 120ft Deck Girder w/ side walkways & railings is done waiting on final layout.
These were commisioned as the first part of the project for the SOU New River deck truss bridge in Tennesee.

Put my vote in for ugly too, but to me its one of those good ugly's. I just bought an undec shell with the intent of making a PRR version that wandered up to the Lehigh Valley just so I can have on of those around on the layout. Hope the old shells fit on the new mechanism. Perhaps I'll put off working on this shell until I know.

I love the GP30. Even the novice railfan can spot that humpback and say with confidence "theres a GP30.."

yes they will, I bought a couple of DCC ready GP30 and GP35 on eBay and the old shells fit the new mechanism and vice versa...

...and yes, they are beautifully ugly !

Back in the day I put a high hood on an Atlas GP30.  It was coming along nicely until something in the photos didn't quite match the model... That's when I learned there were different cab arrangements on the Phase I GP30's. 

That must have been 10 years ago already.

About 14 years ago I was trying to turn a Bachmann SD40-2 into a CGW SD40.  Pictures taught me about -2 differences pretty quick there too!

Both of those modified shells are still around... they were aborted before I got to paint!

The GP-30 is the quintessential locomotive of its day.  Too modern looking to be an F unit, and too old to be truly second generation.

But I know what inspired that cowling piled high on the cab...


Let's face it, given the year it was introduced, you should be thankful it didn't have tailfins.
