Big Boy weathered

Hi! As I promised before... Here´s some pics of a weathered BB  . Left is now oil and more oil... and of course, cleaning all wheels  ;D

I like your weathering job. The rust looks real and almost expect you will have rusty hands if you touch the model.

I have a Big Boy on order and would like to weather it (a little bit).

Do you have any progress photos and some pointers how you did it.

I don't know, I know these things got dirty, but I can't imagine they got THIS rusty while in service, but I am more than happy to be wrong about that.

Rain based dirt, soot & kicked up dust are one thing, but I feel as if a steam engine got this rusty there would be pretty severe safety considerations.

These comments are most certainly not to discourage you, but more for some guidance (if I'm right in my assumptions, otherwise, ignore me).

Well, boys, look at thoose pictures! My friend (who owns the BB) want to have it heaverly weathered so what shall I do? I´m very satisfyed with the result  :-*

Whether people view it as overly-rusted, or practical weathering....  It looks great.  Big Boys were, well..., Big Boys that required a lot of maintenance.  Appearance wasn't as important as reliability.

Look closely at those two pics...  Am I crazy, or is that the same picture except one is cropped, and the other reversed?  Of course the contrast and color balance is different too, but all the details in the pictures are identical, though reversed.

Anyhow- I originally had similar opinions to Ed's, but after seeing the proto pics, I think it's a pretty good job!

Yup, "UNION PACIFIC" is a mirror image on the top photo. Looks good, except it's a little too monochromatic. There are highlights (graphite) on the smokebox and firebox of the prototype. The model looks like its been on the dead line for a while. If that's what it is supposed to represent, it is really, really, good.

The smokebox gets too hot and will burn off any kind of paint.  (BTW, I learned that from Gregg- I have to give credit where it's due  ).

The weathering looks good, but what's with the bent and broken handrails and stanchions?

Well, I always start with a wash (matt black and white spirit). Later when all has dryed I use powder (grey, black and rust) I also mix white spirit and powder, no problems  It´s difficult to explain but I just do like Picasso, with same mad eyes  ;D .
