Weekend Update 2007/08/12

I suppose I'll do the honors this week...  The wife and kids left for the beach yesterday (which in my mind is the height of absurdity since we only live an hour from the gal-dern place... why we spend hundreds to rent a beach house confounds me ???)

I'm planning to slip down for the day to work on my sunburn... then it's back to the grind-stone tomorrow.

Anyhoo, while the cat's away, the mice are eating the cheese.  Here's what I did yesterday.  First, I went through my pile of 15 minute projects, and finished the detailing of my track cleaning car.

I also did some paint and lettering on a caboose acquired recently from the Bufkin Collection.

I'm going to have to re-do it though...  The windows etc. are too modern for the paint scheme.  I'll either re-do it in Red White and Black, or throw another bone to the Reading crew...  The lesson here, open the book you have laying right next to your elbow before plowing ahead with a project!!

Then last night, the coup de tat, I ran trains just about all night!

Here the Penn Central crew holds the siding while a west bound Rock Runner blows through North Junction.  Once he's clear, the PC train can head back toward the yard at Hagerstown with its consist of interchange cars.

I love my staging yard.  Have I mentioned that lately?

SO what's in YOUR wallet?

Lee

SNFF 2007 08 12

Fast, short report from N Scale Convention in Hartford, CT.

This is my 2nd NSC/N Scale convention (Chantilly 2004 was my 1st),
and I'm told that every N Scale Convention has a unique personality all its own.

Speaking for myself, it was a great time, 275 attendees or thereabouts.  What makes
these conventions is really the people and acquaintances that one makes... meeting
in person the Forum/Trainboard/Railwire acquaintances .... meeting the vendors and
manufacturers and thus seeing the real people... the room sales... etc.

As always, these conventions should not be measured in the same way as Train Shows,
rather, they are about having the extended time to meet, visit, eat with, enjoy time
together, with the many people, personalities, manufacturers, and organizations that
will ordain the future of our N scale hobby.  :-)

I got there late in the Convention timeline, arriving just in time for Banquet on
Saturday night, did the Room Sales after the Banquet, and attended the Manufacturer's
Breakfast this morning.   Saw and met many old and new acquaintances and friends.

Here's a few product comments and a few pictures from my all-to-brief time there, I could
not include everything as I have to run to airport soon....  I took notes as fast as I
could, but of course, this is all real-time, so please know that anything below may be
subject to change or be corrected.

That having been said, enjoy! :-)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Comments, no particular order.  Again, I took notes really fast
and all of the following subject to subsequent confirmation/correction:

* Athearn's John Engstrom said their FP45 / F45s are actively still coming and we should
see them in 2008, they are successfully working to meet all of our quality expections.
He also said the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 is on track for end of 2007, but clearly said they
could not make any promises they'd be here in time for Christmas.

* Eric Smith of Micro-Trains confirmed the N scale Heavyweight Passenger Cars are going
ahead, and also referred to their previous announcement of the 40' drop-bottom
gondola.  Cool.

* Intermountain's Frank Angstread (spelling) talked at length about many Intermountain
announcements, and highlighted their AC-12 Southern Pacific Cab Forward (see below).

* Digitrax is working on their sound decoders for N and Z scale.

* Kato was not able to make it, and we all missed them.

* More continued offerings and great stuff from many, including, but not limited to,
BLMA, Deluxe Innovations, George Hollowedel, Jim Hinds, Neals NGauging Trains, Russ
Kaufman, Atlas, Eastern Seaboard Models and many others.

* Some of the projects to come included a N scale Howe Truss Bridge, Atlas vaguely
referred to another new N scale diesel model sometime in late 2008. Micro-Trains
continuing their Z scale product line expansion.

- - - -

Intermountain showed the engineering drawings of their anticipatd
2008 delivery of N scale Southern Pacific AC-12.  I am sure we all look
forward and hoping for excellent execution of what looks to be a
great N scale model:

- - - -

For those of you who like to collect N scale, the NSC 2007 Banquet car is a
Pez Candy drop bottom gondola:

As always, only 275 were handed out, so watch for them on eBay quickly if you
were not able to attend and want one!

- - - -

Finally, Louisville in June 2008 looks to be shaping up to be huge, and many folks
here all agree that it will be a real good one to go to.  Based on what many said,
the size of the N Trak Layout likely will be in the kind of size range that we saw
in Chantilly in 2004.

That's all for now!

Guess you really did stay up all night running trains, Lee, because today is the 12th. not the 11th, as you posted!  ;D ;D ;D

Also did some train running night before last myself, after finally converting my Bachmann WM 2-8-0 to Micro-Trains couplers. Boy, that thing will pull. Had a little problem, though. The crosshead crank was not properly positioned, and it snagged, causing the crosshead to jump out of the guides. Really had no problem fixing this, but after reading some of the complainers on the A-board, I'm sure there are a few that would have tried to return it.  >:(

It looks so nice in that Fireball scheme it seems a shame to converted it to a PRR H10s, but it will be no doubt.

Finally got over to Peach Creek Shops new store in Laurel.  Bought a Baldwin RF-16 wet at a decent price.  Lots of used N in the store.  Wanted to get DCC decoder for the RF-15's and have them installed at the store.  Since I'm all thumbs when it comes to electronics and soldering why not let them do it for a fee.  Only problem was the DCC person in the store does not want to do N.  Says he had too much problems with N DCC installation.  Somewhat disappointed.

P.S.  Lee - Sound another WM/Reading style caboose in my stash.  Only thing, it's done by the same co that did you Laurel Valley one, i.e., needs lots of work.

Does Peach Creek have a website?  I've never been there... the thought of a good second hand bin is intriguing...

What locomotives do you need converted, Bob.  I've gotten pretty handy with a soldering iron, and would be glad to help.  As for that other caboose, I've got plenty, and I'm familiar with the kit you're speaking of...  If I remember correctly, the floor and steps are wrong (passenger style vestibule steps instead of the simple bolt-on affairs of the WM.  I've had a few of them, and sold them off.  Might make a good scrap load from a wreck, though...

I attended the public show at the NSC convention yesterday. I must say I was surprised at how small it was. I was expecting something like Chantilly. At first we thought we would blow through the place by lunch.

I wasn't disapointed though, go to see some friends again(Chuck, Cory and Craig) and found some really great deals from the vendors. I scored two Kato NS Dash 9s for $35 a piece, a load of DI containers for $3 - $4 a pair and some hard to find coil cars I have been looking for. Some free goodies too and got to see a lot of the new things coming our way. Of note for me, the Atlas C420 and the IM SD45-2.

I was surprised that there wasn't a larger Ntrak layout.

Ended up spending the whole day there and glad I went.

Bachmann's UP M-32 had a combine side but the UP M-31 through M-35 was a 70 seat passenger bugger . I resided it with a Lima car side . The configuration is correct but I am 1 square window shy , which is not noticeable unless you count the windows . M-34 was in service till 1958 , the others were retired in 54 or earlier , but I think remained on property till 58 ish .

This is a stock Bachmann that I dressed in W&LG garb

Only 5?  I'm jealous.  I've got 33... so far I've rebuilt and repainted 11 of them...  Urgh.

I finally have motion!  Each and every one of my working locos is sparking and stalling in almost everyone of my turnouts unless I break the speed limit...  but I have motion!  Now I can put this project down and begin planning for the layout room...  I've been inspired by all the work going on with the other threads, and my little roundy-round set has lately become inadequate... (but it finally works!) 8)  ok half of it works... the lower level needs repairs and turnouts, which need cleaned and re-gauged.  But, I can make trains move, for the first time on this layout ever and not on another one of my own since 1992!  woo hoo.

ahhhh that is nice....

Then last night, the coup de tat, I ran trains just about all night!

I think you mean "coup de grace" not "coup d'état"; unless you also took over the government last night!

 :o :o

Good show. I went to visit my parents this weekend, so yet more nothing from me to post.
