Well the hinge snapped on my laptop. I have had this one for over 3 years and it has been very reliable. The past few months I have had to replace the AC adapter and battery, now I will need to conduct major surgery on the thing to put the new hange in. I hope all goes well, but I may be offline for a while.

Sucky part is I am trying to finish up several articles this month.

Does it have a video out port ? Keyboard and mouse port?
If it does just plug in a monitor and keyboard and mouse.

keep the lid closed and still use your pc.

Had a friend of mine that snapped the hinges off her Dell Latitude by closing it on a pen.  The machine was out of warranty but not that old.

I was very surprised to find out from Dell that the parts were available, could be ordered, weren't expensive, etc.  I had no problem changing it out for her.

I'm not sure how anybody but Dell handles this, but it was a pleasant surprise, say compared to the extinct Sotec species, or getting parts for Toshiba - which is possible but insanely expensive.

For many years I worked for DEC and HP and had "access" to top of the line, office PC's...
Never had a single HARDWARE problem - ever, as they were so over-engineered. I even have
a late 1980's vintage MicroVAX that still works perfectly, with a 20 year old operating system still going strong.

Since going on my own, I've bought quite a number of "commodity" Dells and although
they are very fast, they are built like total junk. I also have some Dell Optiplex PC's - too expensive to use for the home - but lightyears more dependable than their "home" stuff.

Both of my Internet servers are Macs and they've run 24/7 for years on end.... rebooting only for select o/s updates that require it!

Well, I have a buddy who's a hardcore Linux/unix guy, who bought his first Mac recently.  Well, it was funny to hear that even the mac has the "Blue screen of death".. but it's Grey?   LOL

I will say this though.. Just got a new PC, which had Vista installed.  I've never seen so much BLUE and white in my life.  It only took my two days to get so pissed that I reformatted and installed XP on it.  The only reason I didn't go with Linux is the wife uses it too. 

I love the windoze version of an OS upgrade:

1. take existing OS and change how the UI looks
2. Add 30-50% of BLOAT so you can say it will run on only newer machines
3. Move most of the core admin features around so it appears that they're now different.
4. Test for about a half hour
5. SHIP IT!

Yeah, I really hate Vista.  Nothing but troubles so far and weird hoops to jump through to get even basic things working because of the new security model.

I really like my MacBook Pro.

*Not sarcastic*  I love the way the Fedora project operates:  a couple of weeks after final release of the previous system, start working on the next one.  after a couple of months have a feature freeze, and spend four or five months fixing bugs.  This leads to about two releases per year, and it all seems to work rather well.  Oh yeah, did I mention that all but one of the crashes (and not many) where directly attributable to either user error on my part or me playing around with the kernel.

My 7 year old PC is still going strong. Granted, I have errors on it at EVERY start up, it locks up every know and again for no appearant reason, I sometimes think I should make the blue screen of death my wallpaper since it seems to be doing that on it's own anyways. But hey, my Win98SE OS (yeah, I up graded to SE because I like to be up on all the new things... flawless) is reliable most of the time 

XP, what's that? Sounds like a AAR boxcar classification.

BTW, there may be a touch af sarcasm  in this post, but just a touch...
