MTL does a scale test car for UP

I have a shot of one in the 50's and its yellow with red numbers and even the same number as on the model . The only change I see on the prototype is the undercarriage needs to be touched up with some gray paint which is no problem . The hanging sign on the handrail is another easy fix . This is good news to transition UP fans . MTL did good on this .

Are the couplers on the prototype really grey? Would it be possible for you to scan the photo you have?

Yes they are , as well as the chassis and handrails .

I have another shot of a UP one ( 2 numbers later than this one ) taken in 1959 that is silver . My guess is the UP repainted these to silver about that time (the late fifty's ) . which coincides with other MOW equipment , and diesel trucks , being repainted to silver .

I sent you a PM , and then another PM on what book and who has it listed . Copy right laws makes me ascared to dare publish something from a book that is still available for purchase .

Erie's had red couplers. I've seen photos online, but can't find them now.

Agree with you on scanning and posting the photo, but a simple citation wouldn't violate "fair use" i.e. "Bla bla's Guide to Union Pacific Scale Test Cars, page z".

It's not in the Morning Sun Color Guide to the UP (Volume 1) so rule out that book...

One thing I would like to see, a unit train of scale test cars.

I wonder how many any given railroad had.  I wouldn't know where to start looking for that kind of information. I suspect it's buried in historical society publications that are based on official railroad documents, if it's anywhere.

Yellow car

Which can still be had at Karensbooks.com

Thanks, Richie.

I just got Volume 1 of the series but given the huge UMTRR subscription revenues I have no excuses for not owning all of the Morning Sun Color Guides...  :D

Interesting that there is a subtle difference between the yellow and silver one with respect to the door in the center of the car.  Almost a brake wheel like object on the door on the silver one.  Since the caption from the MSCG notes that the car is from the Pennsy I wonder if the other of the PRR's scale test cars are similar-- which would mean a "compromise" should MTL do the car in Pennsy.

That's fascinating. I wonder why they went to the trouble of painting the couplers.

I think its just the opposite . Spray without regard of wasted paint and time offset by the saved time of wrapping a drop cloth around the coupler , air hose and glad hand . I have noticed that other UP cars , some revenue type , have had more than over spray applied to the knucks as well . Could be just some guys like to make stuff pretty .

You should increase the rate. I'm sure everyone would be glad to pay double your current fee. ;D

I remember reading in one of the CRHS publications (in Vito's, incidently), that CR painted it's scale test car hardware so that it was immediately evident if anything had been changed out, and would change the known weight of the car.

Maybe UP did the same thing?
