The part number for the undecorated one is different than the current release. This must mean that the new one will have some sort of variation. I'm waiting to hear back from Athearn on this.

Update: The forthcoming undecorated model will be the UP/ D&RGW Version as opposed to the current CRR version.

I'm curious about seeing Clinchfield but not D&H.

Not that I really have a dog in the hunt, but it's still interesting.

Were they similar to the Athearn model? EDIT: I see it is based on the same model - different tender? That may be the reason:

WM had Challengers too, but IIRC not quite like the Athearn model.

I guess the only thing negative about this model is the flanges - right?  That's great news for Athearn, and us.  It's a great day in the hobby when a new model is as flawless as the Challenger.

Actually I've been watching this model with great interest. The success or failure may have an impact on the likelyhood of me seeing another articulated made - the N&W CLass A.

BLI has been selling them like hotcakes in HO, so who knows? PCM still is in the starting gate, so it may be decades before it happens. :-X

Not to mention IM's N scale cab forward too..it looks like at long last articulated steam will be readily available so there's hope for other types too! :)

Those sloganizers are hilarious.  I think I need to hop on the bandwagon.

The Challengers we've gotten run as good as any N-scale engines I've ever seen. I've not had the chance to see about pulling power, but I would guess they will easily pull 60-75 MT equipted cars. The details are outstanding...nice as brass IMHO. The sound is amazingly good for N-scale, far better than I expected. On  a 1-10 scale, I think this engine deserves a 9.5 or better.

Delivery in July
ATH11801   4-6-6-4 Undec (UP/ D&RGW Version)
ATH11805   4-6-6-4 UP #3943
ATH11806   4-6-6-4 UP #3977
ATH11807   4-6-6-4 CRR #672
ATH11809   4-6-6-4 D&RGW (Road # not available yet)

To make this more interesting...

ATH11805 is a UP unit with coal tender and smoke deflectors
ATH11806 is a UP unit in the two-tone greyhound scheme with oil tender

So a new Greyhound scheme Challenger - better dig up those old Arnold/Rivarossi heavyweights... :)
