I saw awhile ago that Aztec is milling speaker slots in the Atlas fuel tank area.  How is this different from the speakers mounted on the decoder?  Bigger speaker maybe?

I haven't run my Challenger yet, but as soon as I find a power pack, I may be in trouble as well.  Sound is cool if it works....  ;D

Brian, the speaker is smaller than the one that you need to mill the frame for.

Well, they don't seem to be available.  Witness the email I recieved from Tony's Train Exchange.

Daryl,
Thank you for your sound decoder reservation, shipping when released.
Thanks
Tony

I've installed the original style Atlas drop in board milled frame style in an Intermountain SD-45T. I replaced the stock speaker with one from Tony's (their 'dream speaker' line) which I think sounds better. I've also installed one in a Life-Like Berk with 2 speakers (wired in parallel, the amp in these isn't powerful, series wiring is a definite no-no) in the tender.

The sounds isn't bad. It isn't the fancy prime mover and airhorn specific that the $140 loksound or soundtraxx but it was also $65. The diesel is a generic diesel sound, a number of whistle choices, some of which to me sound completely horrible (as if they were sampled incorrectly or recorder over a phone). Ditto with the steam whistles and bells. All in all, they are decent sounding decoders. I second the suggestion to turn down the sounds. The default for everything is 3 (on a 0 to 3 scale). Simply changing them all to 2's instead helped the sound quality quite a bit, IMHO. I then tweeked some quieter based on my preferences.

I saw the P42 decoder in the Kato at Springfield, but they couldn't get it to work while I was there  :-\

The P42 we saw in Springfield had it's speaker on the top of the board where there is no hole in the body to let the sound goes tru ...
I think I was with Ian when I saw it , but with the ambient noise in a show like that , it's difficult to say that it was loud .
Thanks ,
Louis

The diesel is a generic diesel sound,

This is the deal killer for me. Alcos sound much different than EMDs, Turbo 645 engines sound much different than non-turbo 645, etc. I'd rather have no sound than the wrong ones.

Agreed on this
editable and downloadable sound files need to be available for this to become a mainstream item.  With generic sounds I may buy a few.  With more specific sounds I will be buying a shedload...
