I have been coughing, sneezing and blowing my nose all week. Caught a cold at the WGH show. But, using the down time to read Eric Hirsimaki's Lima Locomotive history. Far more interesting than I anticipated. Did y'all know Lima once made vacuum cleaners? I knew they made cranes and steam shovels (That's how I got a copy of a Lima Catalog as a kid - a friend of my parents was in the street paving business.), but vacuums?  ???

Closeup of the Burnam Yard roundhouse.  This 6 stall roundhouse was kitbashed from 2 Atlas 3 stall kits.


This is a shot of the roundhouse's boiler house.  Taken from the Walthers Machine Shop.  I added styrene strip over the windows on the boier house to make it look like it was built at the same time as the roundhouse.

I re-did the junction from the wye to the yard branch thanks to my first ever Chuck Pack. 


I needed to be able to send trains in or out to both west and eastbound tracks.  This will help loosen up the traffic when the yard gets jammed up.

I'll also be working on some scenery for the area around the wye so you all don't get bored looking at the older parts of the layout.

This was my solution to one of the problems of a nolix that does not circle a room, but loops back a number of times. This causes the decks to converge on each other (vertically) in some locations. I could have put a tunnel here, but Murphy's Law made me leery.

Instead I built the housing for an eight-foot long linear accelerator. At the right end, it plunges into the mountains. I felt this would distract the viewer's eyes.

Our train is on the back wall of the east side. I designed the nolix so that all climbs would be on the back wall. At the end of this climb, we'll be at the High Bridges, and the entrance to the second deck.

Tom, you should know that if the fence was scaled 100% from the prototype, the mesh would literally be less than .001".  The mesh is very close to being scale but still rigid.

I modifed the Atlas underframe and added Atlas friction bearing caboose trucks with Fox Valley low profile metal wheelsets.  I need to add the grab irons and do a little fine tuning, then its off to the paint shop.

Started working on the Elkins Roundhouse last night.  I'm going for six stalls instead of the originally planned 5.  We'll see how long the materials hold out...



Ground level view. The siding is Evergreen corrugated metal. There is a brick foundation wall that will go up to the bottoms of the windows.  I photocopied my CAD plan onto clear acetate for the windows, which will be installed after the whole shebang is painted and weathered.

Sleep is overrated...
