LL GP38-2 problems on C55 turnouts
« on: January 13, 2007, 12:26:05 PM »

I received my my ATSF GP38-2 yesterday from Chuck at featherrivertrains. This model is one of the most nicely detailed and painted model
I have seen in a while, I'm very happy with my purchase, but...The geep has been having a hard time runing over my Atlas c55 turnouts.
From what I can tell it seems like the wheals are geting stuck in the turnout. Has anybody had this problem? What should I do? ???

You might want to try checking the gauge of the wheelsets. Out-of-gauge wheelsets is a common cause for new locomotives to derail.

Definitely wheel gauge.  Since it's brand new, it can't be cat hair.  I just had the same problem with a LL BL-2, the wheels were in gauge, but it kept picking a particular switch.
When I looked more closely, there was a bunch of crap wound around the axle, which was preventing the necessary side-to-side slop that allows the wheels to wiggle through the flangeways.  Cleaned it out, reset the gauge, no problem.

If your turnouts are #5 then it could easily be the track. More specifically the flangeways on the frog casting don't meet the NMRA standards gage.

Both problems can be fixed with a NMRA gauge.

I'd imagine it'd be pretty painful (for both of you).

Both problems:

1. Wheel gauge
2. Turnout flange ways

OK the gauge will let you find the problems.

For the #5 turnouts I use a cut off wheel to grind the guard rails thinner till the gauge will go through with no problems.

For the wheels, well doesn't very one know how to do that. If the wheels are out just push or pull to make them match the gauge. If in you can use a small flathead to move the wheels.

M-80, I like that one   :D
