Second try. This week some Diesel hauled passenger trains on the Long Island Rail Road a half century ago. Such rural scenes most likely no longer exist on Long Island, although I have not visited there in the past 35 years.

Next week, an LIRR steam fan trip.

I caught this shot by pure luck over Christmas vacation, back in Illinois:

Two of the KB&S's finest crossing Court Street (Illinois Rte. 17), toward the east end of town. This location was where I first discovered the existence of the KB&S, although I was on the other side of the tracks (at a McDonald's) at that time, and the KB&S was running Alcos instead of Geeps.

The PRR Catonsville branch - 35 years since the last run:

There must have been a wood trestle here - one rail still is in the air - the other rail is lying in the stream below.

This is where the line crossed the beltway. The wall is for the Baltimore beltway. The bridge was taken down in the 1980s.

I saw some crews taking up rail a few days ago, which prompted me to document the remains - I have many mrore photos.

If you can, get some detail shots of the rail and any tie plates (if any) too...

I have some tie plates. And some rail shots too.

That was the rail line that got me interested in digging up old stuff.

I saw it on a map while at UMBC and wanted to check it out. I really can't picture it in service.
I wish there were some pics of it in service. I'd love to see the beltway bridge.

Ed, I seriously doubt if there are any photos. The train ran on Wednesdays, and again if needed on Saturdays. As busy as the corridor was back then (I think the crew ran out of Gwynn's Run Yard), the train ran in the dark of night. A funny story about the line. When I moved to Baltimore, I looked at renting a new rowhouse that backed up on the line. When I told the manager I worked for the railroad, he wanted to know how often the train ran. I would not tell him which days it ran though - if it ran on Thursday and someone got hit, I might be sued. ::) Ended up the other end of town in Loch Raven Village in Towson.

Here is a patched cylindrical hopper caught today at Southern States in Carville along Route 301 on Maryland's eastern shore. It is GCCX 112409. Unknown original owner, but I would guess Santa Fe.

Thanks 3rdRail!!!!! Yay, it worked!
