I was watching
the video and thinking that even 1:1 parts looked sort of sloppy and crude...

Yeah the smaller you get the high res you would need.

These are Z scale from MakeMyModel:


And this is AFTER a little bit of sanding.  OK for Z because they are basically the only US cars made so far.

The N scale dump truck bodies I have from M4D are much smoother than this.

I think the problem is that each of these systems leaves behind
"artifacts" - lines, etc... and the smaller you go, the more they overwhelm
the model.

The MMM vehicles in "N" are not as bad, but do require finishing to get the
level of looking like a casting. Since castings don't exist for many of their
parts, it's worth the effort to me.

I have suggested to them that they do more unique things like MOW machines,
which usually have lots of complex straight lines and fewer curves, which clearly
seems to the the place where the rendering leaves behind the most junk.

BTW, has anyone looked into the legality of taking open, public domain
3D models from TrainSim and other places and rendering them in 3D?? Perhaps
the licensing of these is restricted in this way?

How the material is layered/deposited plays into the 'lines' as well.  You can have a high resolution and not have visble line artifacts. 


This was done with rapid-prototyping... this was run just for test fitment, not detail... I added the grills to use it as a promo shot/teaser.

Most of the TrainSim stuff is simple box shapes with detailed graphic overlays.  So any 3D model created from them would look like a Brio train.

There are some other 3D models out there that may work for things like cars and planes...
