Finished a pair of Walthers cars to go with the BLI car I did previously.
Probably the only three I'll do, since these wood cars were few and far between in the early 70s. This one is for Tom, well done to burnt:
There's a layer of Polly Scale US Med Green on first to change the base color green. Tube oils followed that, with a white wash over the herald to kill the bright red and turn it pink and a couple earthy, woody colors over the rest.
This one in rare, as if it had been painted recently. Not quite a Penn Central era car like the other two might be.
This is an oil wash to blend everything together, with a little dry brushed oil colors to make it pop. I like to take a light tan mix of medium viscosity and brush it on the car near the bottom for dust. I take a big, clean brush and stipple this around to blend it and make it transparent. It works great with the oil since they don't dry while you're working with them. I suppose chalk would work too though.

The first layer on this car was an airbrush coat of Microscale Flat, some Polly Scale dust, rust, and grimy black. Airbrush probably works best for the even coat of grime most express cars received traveling at high speed. There is some oil highlights on it after the fade coat. I probably like this look the best. But variety is needed.
