I bought a used slide scanner! Got it yesterday and am learning to scan slides. Here are a couple of highly unusual ones, taken of the Jamaica Railway Corp. Yeah, that one in the Caribbean and not in the Borough of Queens.




No, it ain't an RDC, just a single ended British version made by Metro-Cammell.

No, it ain't an RDC, just a single ended British version made by Metro-Cammell.

With that single hump , a change in name to Metro-CAMEL (as in dromedary) would have worked , and lent itself to an interesting logo with some Jamaican shroud draped over its neck .

Some bigger critters this week.....

Italy in September 1974 - a 743 class 2-8-0 with double Franco-Crosti boiler at Piadena



Portugal in September 1974 - a German built inside cylinder 4-6-0 on a eastbound passenger at Regua



Czechoslovakia in May 1975 - one of the magnificent 3 cylinder 4-8-4Ts at Jedlova

Early 1970's - 1974 IIRC. There will be more next week. The Jamaica Railway Corp. operated at one time with Canadian built 4-8-0's and British compartment coaches. Freight was strictly US cars. All I saw were single sheathed USRA boxcars and tank cars. It was Dieselized with English Electric US-style switchers and the M-C cars. Later it was modernized with more Canadian Diesels and Swiss-built coaches. It has been idle at least a decade now.

No. Most Czech steam, especially after WWII was home grown product, though there appears to be some French influence in their (internal) design. There were 60 of these 4-8-4Ts built by local builder CKD, the first appearing in 1950. The other major loco builder was Skoda.

Prior to that there was some Austrian and Hungarian designs and influence, but by and large the CSD steam fleet was one of the most individual in Europe.

I agree, but what I would do to get a similar photograph today?

Its nice to have the opportunity to post these 'blast from my past' in this forum. I took those pics when I was 19 and travelling solo - 30 odd years on I can't believe I did that, but given that all those scenes are now just history makes me sure glad I did!

Lenny53 - I was up in Bracebridge last week and took this ONRail going the opposite way.
According to the locals - it doesn't run on time or have a schedule (this one was 1/2 hour late to whatever time it was supposed to arrive).Weird way to run a railroad I'd say.
