This week I have some undated photos of New Orleans streetcars. But, judging from the autos and the "$100,000 New Orleans Open" advertising cards on the streetcars, I'd say around 1970.

A southbound mixed at Lexington, NC


A northbound unit train at Linwood, NC 06/14/06.


Northbound #172 as it leaves the Spencer Yard at Linwood, NC on 06/15/06. Had 130 cars, mostly hoppers from Canada. There were at least that many southbound the day before.

Here's a quick tour of the flood damage in Dorchester County, Maryland.  Seems the Delmarva Peninsula ain't as flat as we thought!


This one wasn't so bad.  But it's pretty obvious that the culvert pipe was inadequate for the task.  On Sunday, the water had risen above track level.


This is the major washout.  About 60' of right of way just disappeared into Skinners Run.  Again, the creek had risen above track level, overwhelmed the culvert, and just carried away the embankment.

The sleepy little creek in the background was the culprit.  That and 12+ inches of rain in 8 hours.


No, that's not the latest roller coaster at Six Flags...  The good news is both of these washouts occured between Seaford and Hurlock, where Perdue operates a major feed operation.  There's several covered hoppers there now that will have to be retrieved, and rail service will be restored.  This line was recently rehabbed to the tune of 3.5 million, so the state has a lot invested in putting the house back in order.

As far as I know, there were no problems between Hurlock and Cambridge, but the line there is pretty rough to begin with, and there is only one regular shipper on-line in Cambridge.

It's pretty amazing what a little water can do.

Lee, if I recall correctly, this is MDDE's southern rail line, isn't it? Or was this closer to Seaford and therefore part of NS's operation?

I did some railfanning in Youngstown again. This is the Center St. bridge on the Eastside where the NS crosses the CSX. A few years ago this area was re-built, in the past the P&LE/Erie, B&O, and PRR crossed here.
Soon as I pulled in:

About 3 minutes later the Ohio Central pulled up on the right and stopped to wait for the CSX on the left:

I haven't seen this locomotive in the area before, it's a SD18. I found this photo of it right across the river from where I'm at:

With the OC barely over the crossing, here comes another CSX:


Not bad for a spur of the moment try at a photo spot.
 
The Center Street bridge was recently replaced. It used to be a big steel structure, with steel mills under it. Here is the very same area in 1979, from the bridge. You can see the layout of the crossings have changed now.

I just felt like taking photos, no modern modeling will result of this (I swear)

But just think if I was in the same spot back in, oh let's say 1950. I wouldn't need to hunt down the trains, they would be all around me and much more interesting to me.

If you look at the top left you can see a orange colored bridge crossing the river, that is the same bridge back then.


There would be glowing hot metal cars running back and forth. Erie's "Morning Steel" PAX train would just be passing into P&LE tracks to finish the route from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, maybe with a K5 or brand new PA-1 pulling it. B&O, PRR, and NYC passing by and tons of little 0-6-0's switching the mills.

You're right, but it was parked in a horrible spot for pictures both on the way out and way back.  :'(

The train comes through Newport NC

I was heading home from work and saw this coming over the Newport River bridge.  By the time I had parked it was coming up into town.  All this was on Tuesday.








My girlfriend's last name is Foster.








Caught this building up air today at the port







For the next week the county's population will be doubled AS WELL AS THE USUAL TOURISTS!  I had to go to Beaufort for my dad and ended up having to park five blocks away from my destination at a friend's house.  All this because the America's Sail is in town.  It is a major PITA to get anywhere around here now.
