SD38

I am looking for SD38s in N-scale. I know Intermountain may one day produce an SD38-2, but I am looking for three SD38s. Does anyone make them or 3D print a shell?

For a "close enough" model, I simply shaved off one of the 3 roof fans on my Kato SD40-2.  It helped that I was modeling an IHB SD38 rebuild, painted all black, so if some details are off, who will know but me?

Some time ago Mark 4 Design offered shells for various SD38 (-2) models, but I'm not sure if they are still available.

I have one each of the Mk4 shells.

One SD38 and one SD38-2.
I'll complete them (one day  )

Me too!
Mine will be one day a DM&IR SD38-2.
So the question is who will be faster, me or Intermountain....  ;)

Mark4Design shells were.. 2008?-2012? time frame... Whatever he was using to print those shells was pretty impressive for it's time..

Consumer grade 3d printers are just now getting to this point of accuracy.

The Mark 4 shells were amazing. They were way ahead of their time. I had 4 of them to recreate BC Hydro SD38-2s and a SD38AC. Time overtook me and I sold them to a gentleman in Minnesota who painted them all and had them in operation in an embarrassingly short time after I'd had them for a dozen years!

Mark’s Prefactory 3D printer produced injection-molded quality parts with absolutely no layering…..two decades plus ago!
He printed two CB&Q SM16 stock cars for me but, unfortunately, each had one end mangled….just about the time he decided to retire to his homeland New Zealand.  AFAIK he never got the machine st up having been offered a job he couldn’t refuse.
I lost contact with him years ago and hope all is well with him and his family!!

For memory when I was talking with Mark about the potential for some Alco based shells, the machine he was using was producing parts for the medical profession if my memory is correct.  Sadly the only Alco hood I got was a high hood nose for a C-628/630.  I too lost track of Mark after I got my last parts from him over 10 years ago.
Cheers

I have a few more SD38's I want to do. Can you please let us know what you think of the shell when you get them?
