Highly doubt they were after toy trains, probably just stole what they could steal. Later when they cracked it open and didn't see large screen TV's they said "damn".  Was the whole container their stuff?
I also doubt they were after toy trains.  But on the other hand, let's remember than an N scale locomotive fits into a box that totals 12 cubic inches, and sells, in Rapido's case, for a couple hundred bucks.  A good sized shoebox can contain several thousand dollars worth of locomotives.  Not far off from what the box would be worth if it was packed with dollar bills.  People who steal semi trailers without knowing what's in them are likely to have sources to get rid of all kinds of stuff.

This of course also means that even a couple cartons of stuff gone missing means Rapido is going to end up on the short end.  My experience is that almost as a rule, thieves steal about $1 less than whatever your deductible is.  Even if they are insured for the total amount, there is a lot of employee time and effort that go into making things right for the dealers and customers, and depending on how much went missing, in these days of "zero inventory" and "build to pre-order", it may be difficult to replace, insurance notwithstanding, until such time, if any, that there is a second run.

Retail price, sure. But if the thieves can't sell it (either because something's too "hot" and recognizable or they just don't have any illicit contacts in that market) it's worth nothing.

Years ago, a thief stole $60,000.00 worth of equipment from a lab I managed at work.   Eventually they caught the thief (it was the security guard!) - they had fenced the equipment for $300.00.

Conclusion - thieves often know that someone will buy what they steal, but they may not have a a good idea of its value.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Reports on another forum indicate that the trailer has been found abandoned and the MRR items have been recovered.

That reminds me of how, upon receipt of a new piece of rolling stock, I have often wondered where it's been in its existence, perhaps China, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, maybe on a hot intermodal across the U.S., etc.  These Rapido models would perhaps have an interesting story to tell.  Anyone know how far that trailer got before it was abandoned?

Nope, they haven't said anything about where this happened.

I would imagine not all that far. Boost the trailer, empty it out as quick as possible and abandon what's left behind. You don't want to hold onto the trailer itself too long. The contents simply vanish into the ether.

They should let Trainworx get pictures of the trailer, and we can have a model of the crime scene.

Or if it's a shipping container, should be Jacksonville Terminal :D

It was a domestic LTL trucking carrier, so probably not a container.
