On the new BLI release which schemes are most appropriate for the WW2 era - somewhat skeptical of the BLI sales blurb...

Does the sans serif scheme denote cars in some service?

I know the previous release with stripes is 1947-

The "1945-48" listing is probably best.  The sans-serif (Futura / Fleet of Modernism) lettering is not a service indicator - it was supposed to be the new look for all cars.  Someone in management took a dislike to it and pulled the plug, so not a lot of equipment other than the Pullmans and other streamlined passenger cars (which also got the maroon window band and elaborate striping) kept it for any length of time.

I'm beginning to think 1947-1953 may be the sweet spot for Pennsy N-scale...

1947-1949 is my preferred time period.  It's great if you like PRR steam and don't care so much about diesels.  If you like both then summer 1956 is probably better as you still have most steam classes still around plus you get a variety of the gen1 diesels like the Baldwins, Fairbanks-Morse, EMD GP7/GP9 (fudging a little), ALCo RS1/RS3 and so forth.

Another question...

When PRR added stripes in 1947-8 did Tuscan Red get darker?

The BLI new run is considerably lighter than the first run - close to MTL Tuscan cars with stripes...  :facepalm:

Much like freight car color, Tuscan also darkened up over time.
