Flange Squeal Sound Effects?

I’m not generally a fan of sound locos due to the conspicuous absence of all the other ambient sounds, railroad-sourced and otherwise. Wouldn’t an adaptation of the “Surroundtraxx” system have been ideal for what you’re talking about? Whatever happened to that, anyway?
