Over the distances involved, by the time one goes through security, and adds travel time to and from the airport, the train is probably faster, city center to city center.

We were visiting the Loire Chateaux back in 2004 and our hotel was just beside the station in Tour , there was about 8 TGV sets waiting , and I was drooling !!!
So during dinner I ask our guide if I had the time to do a ride and she found me a way to do it before the morning visits .
So I got up soon in the morning and went to Paris 300 km away ( about 185 miles ) , left Tour Station at 6:15 am and at 7:25 I was in the station in downtown Paris !!!
Had a coffee and a croissant , bought an Eiffel tower postcard to proove the others that I went to Paris in the morning .
Took the train back at 7:45 am and got off at 8:55 am in Tour !!!!
The bus was leaving at 9:00 and I had the time to do 600 km. during the time the group was getting up and had breakfast  !!!!!!!

So try that with a plane with all the problem getting on board and having to be there at least 1 hour before ...
Thanks ,
Louis
