Sure, the front truck's wheelbase is shorter, but all you can see (and from very low angle) is just the small portion of the wheels. While I do like accurate models, in this case I would not really expect them to tool up a new (unique) truck (likely not used anywhere else), just to correct the wheelbase. I would rather see them redo the roofwalk, or flush-mounted window glass.
Since the only things that really show on the front trucks are the wheels, why wouldn't a MTL civil war era truck work? Looks like the space between wheels is pretty close to the diagram above. I never run mine. Pretty much static models in an MOW line.

The OP was disappointed that Atlas did not model the truck correctly. Sure, a modeler can probably do what you are recommending, but I'm not sure if Atlas would partner with MTL to use their trucks.
