C&EI boxcar numbers question
« on: September 05, 2019, 02:05:01 AM »

I am trying to letter a model of the C&EI's 66500 series PS-1s.  Microscale has a set with everything I need, except that the numbers are too small.  CDS dry transfers has a set with the right size numbers, so that isn't a problem.

The problem is that, at some point between 1966 and 1976, they seem to have renumbered the cars.  I have found a picture online of what appears to be the same cars, 40 ft PS-1s with 8 ft Youngstown doors, in the 1192xx series, from the late 1970s.  The number, and the paint under it, are in bad shape, showing a "6" from a previous number.

My two questions are:

Are these the same cars?

And, if they are, when were they renumbered?

Thank you.

Did you see this?

http://www.railgoat.railfan.net/other_cars/cei_cars/cei_number/066500-066899.htm

It doesn't say when, but I can say that some of the new series shows up in the 1969 ORER.

Thank you!  No, I hadn't seen it, and had never heard of Railgoat. I'll have to bookmark that one.

Looks like I need to find some MP-style numbers.

And, it looks like the earlier 65500 series, with 6 ft Superior doors, was sent to the L&N in 1969.  I had thought about modeling them instead, but couldn't find a 6 ft 5-panel Superior door in N scale.  Atlas is out of them.

From the CEI HS diagram book (available on DVD from the CEI Historical Society, includes LOTS of passenger and freight and diesel loco diagrams and other info)
66500-66899 series renumbered to 118909 to 119298.

Just a guess, but a lot of equipment was renumbered with the MP takeover in the late 1960s. (diagram dated 8-15-68, but under the original numbers, with the revised numbers in a note on the corner of the page)

If you want to get picky, the diagram notes that the early cars were built with National C-1 trucks and last 100 cars with Barber S-2-B.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Yes, I got that from a list of 40 ft PS-1 boxcars someone posted years ago.
http://www.steamerafreightcars.com/prototype/frtcars/protofrtcarsmain.html
It only gives the as-built numbers, but has the door sizes and types for every car he knew of.  But I'm not going to try matching the trucks on a one-off interchange car!

I model the BN in Montana, so one C&EI boxcar is all I really need.  Incidentally, the MS decal set won't work, as the road name lettering is spaced for a 50 ft car.  So I've ordered the CDS set anyway.  Oh well...

On the other hand, the numbers were easy.  I had some on one of my custom decals, from Donald Manlick in 1992, that look almost perfect.  They were intended for my narrow gauge, but will work fine here as well.

No, mine has the older large initials and spelled-out name.  It does have the MP-style numbers, though, like the one you show.  It looks like the same series, though.
