Caboose Marker Lamps

Very nice on the marker lanterns!  A good N-scale human in the photo (instead of the dime) would give us a better idea of their size. 

I find that MV lenses work very well on caboose marker lamps instead of actually lighting them.

Check these Pico Chip LED's from Evan Designs out. They might work for lighting your markers. Very small and VERY bright, would need high ohm resistor.

Carl, those are simply SMD 0402 size LEDs with a cute name.  The 0201 LEDs are even smaller (and are now generally available form Digikey or Mouser).  I guess if Model Train Software ever starts selling thse, they will probably call them "Femto LEDs).    Cute names for items known by another name.  I'm also amused by the fact that Model Train Software sells . . . hardware. 

Here are the common SMD package sizes (no cute names)

1206    3.0 x 1.5mm    0.12 x 0.06"
0805    2.0 x 1.3mm    0.08 x 0.05"
0603    1.5 x 0.8mm    0.06 x 0.03"
0402    1.0 x 0.5mm    0.04 x 0.02"
0201    0.6 x 0.3mm    0.02 x 0.01"

DM-Toys sells pre-wired 0201 LEDs but they are fairly pricey (for me since I can solder my own leads).  They might also be available on eBay.

You're welcome Carl.
Those numeric designations are quite descriptive since they indicate the device's footprint.  Split that designation into two 2-digit numbers. That gives you the dimension in hundredths of an inch. For example 0402 device is "04" and "02".  So the device's footprint is 0.04" by 0.02".  There is also a metric designation for these (in tenths of milimeters).  For example the 0402 device is also known as 1005 in metric system. So it is "10" and "05" or 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm

Knowing this comes in very handy when trying to easily visualize the size of SMD components.

Here is a handy SMD sizes chart. While it mentions resistors, the numeric designation and footprint size applies to other SMD components (like LEDs, and capacitors).

I believe I need white though and achieve the colors with transparent paint.

I ordered some from Digikey.  We'll see if I have any luck wiring them.

Jim Hinds from Richmond Controls also suggested to try putting the led in the caboose and use the mounting pin as a light pipe.  Nothing but things to try.

Raw 0201 LEDs?  I ordered some back when they first hit. Caution: literally do not sneeze (or cough or even exhale sharply) around them.

I managed to wire a couple (somehow), then decided it was worth the $ to have someone else do it.

Keep searching eBay. I bought dozens of prewired white 0201s at a buck each--the listings come and go.
