TomyTec Trailer Collection No. 9

Hobby Search announced pre-orders were open for TomyTec Trailer Collection No. 9 about a month ago, but I just “discovered” the announcement.  https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10553706

The auto carrier is all new tooling, and even though these are 1:150 scale models, there could be some kitbashing opportunities.

One thing I noticed in the photos is the 10-hole “aluminum“ wheels, that if they represent 1:150 scale 22.5 inch wheels, they would be reasonably close in size to 24.5 inch 1:160 scale wheels.

Also, I have the “reefer” without the reefer unit that first appeared in trailer collection 5, and here are some comparison photos of the TomyTec trailer to a Micro-Trains 45-foot trailer.







The only “problem” with the trailer is the curbside door is on the “wrong” side of the trailer for those of us modeling areas where one drives on the right side of the road rather than the left side of the road.   

Edit:  The curbside door is on the reefer in trailer collection no. 9.  The trailer in the comparison photos does not have a curbside door, but I have considered adding a BLMA reefer unit to the nose of the trailer.

Not bad looking, and certainly doesn't look out of scale for a North American trailer.

Similar 1:150 N Scale brass and stainless steel models of the portrayed single axle auto transport trailer were once offered by the boutique Japanese manufacturer Pair Hands.

An extremely low production kit that was sold (circa 2013) on eBay by Plaza Japan, the kits (and more so the factory built-up models) are difficult to find and relatively rare.

With a single piece frame and sides that were pre-bent at the factory, the Pair Hands version is a much better rendition.

Marketed primarily as toys, the framework on the Tomytec trailers appears to be rather heavy.



"Mostly stock with some modifications to better match North American prototypes", here are two photographs of a Pair Hands trailer that was assembled and photographed in 2013 by our very own Daniel Leavitt.

The tractor in the first image is a Herpa Kenworth cab that has been mounted on an Atlas Ford chassis.

The blue car carrier is fitted with a trailer that is similar to the yellow and white one that is seen in the first prototype image that is attached to this post.

From the various photos that I have seen on the Internet, it appears that many of the Japanese car haulers utilize Hino tractor cabs.

While Japanese auto carrier trucks are much smaller than American "Stinger" rigs, notice how they still manage to load minivans and SUVs on them.

Although some companies do not use them, the rig in the third photo has a single car headrack assembly over the cab with a station wagon chained down to its deck.

That fluted reefer trailer looks very nice.  I'm guessing they are nearly impossible to find at this point.

Trailer Collection No. 9 will be only the second time that trailer has been included in a collection.  DM Toys will usually sell individual models from each collection.  https://www.en.dm-toys.de/liste/kategorie_en/fahrzeuge_en/hersteller/Tomytec.html

Now it looks like they have the models from Truck Collections No. 10 and No. 11 available, so I would check their web site when the Trailer Collection No. 9 is released next January.

I wish I knew Pair-Hands made two versions, I would have jumped on that blue one. It has a slightly more American look to it.

These kits were pretty easy to build - a lot more so than the Traincat trailers. Single axle trailers like this are fairly rare in the states due to axle loading, but they are used by some secondary transport companies (auto auctions, personal vehicle transport, etc.) The version Traincat made goes well with the Showcase GMC Brigadier and 9500 short nose cabs. These were used extensively by Leaseway, Penske and others in the 80's and 90's.
