What's interesting is that the RGS never came close to the Rio Grande River.  It was entirely on the other side of the Continental Divide from the Rio Grande.  It got its name from running south from the Denver & Rio Grande's narrow-gauge transcontinental line over Marshall Pass and through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  Of course by the time the RGS went operational, the Rio Grande had standard-gauged the Tennessee Pass line and that was their new transcon, making the original narrow gauge line a secondary line.  The RGS was obsolete from the start, not unlike the White Pass & Yukon.

The RGS never went near the Black Canyon or the town of Gunnision though.  It WAS looked at often for UN-gauging, LOL.

Neither did so many named 'Pacific' or 'Western' ever get anywhere near but, named nonetheless...

Probably true, by the time the railroad was built.  But the Upper Colorado, above Grand Junction, was once called the "Grand River", with the Colorado originating at the junction of the Grand and Gunnison Rivers.  In Spanish that would also be the Rio Grande, which is probably why the name was changed.   Wikipedia had that in their article on Grand Junction, but I haven't found when the name was officially changed.

"Reality Based RGS"

I'm fortunate to be in a circle of narrow gauge modelers that go to great lengths to reproduce the prototype rather than modeling someone else's model so to that end mine's not unique.  However, a lot of those amazing layouts stay in the narrow gauge "clique" appearing only in NG&SLG, HOn3 Annual, Sn3 Modeler, etc. and don't quite make it to the mainstream.  Kalmbach still seems to think the San Juan Central is the "gold standard" for how a narrow gauge layout should look, and that the more track stacked in the vertical, the more realistic it is.  Don't forget to have bridges crossing other bridges for maximum realism...     Saguaro cactus doesn't grow in Colorado?  Tough, it's mandatory!  No grass, just rocks...!   

I went way out of my way on this one to avoid all that.  In retrospect I sacrificed a lot of railroad possibility to remain true to the prototype.  No train ever passes through a scene more than once and the scenery dominates the single lonely track through the wilderness.  That's the real RGS to those of us that know it from history and from standing on the former grade.
