When I was down in Mazatlan earlier this month, I got to view these re-purposed coal gondolas which have been turned into covered gondolas for coil steel. Next to our cruise ship, there was a freighter being unloaded all day which had a couple coils strapped to a pallet. These pallets were being stacked on the dock and being stored in the adjacent warehouses for future truck/rail transport to the nearby Ford auto plants. There also was a large forklift constantly taking off and putting on the covers on these cars. There also were some 50' Railgons but mostly these cars.

While delivering on campus of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA this morning, I caught the local heading down to the warehouse's at the end of the line.  Many of these cars carry beer.

Those aren't old coal gons, they're actually newer cars built by National Steel Car, mostly for trash, C&D debris and scrap metal loading.

Coil steel is a new one on me, especially with those giant tall rounded covers, when the coils won't come anywhere near the tops of the cars in this case. (You'd think the covers didn't need to be quite so high, is all I'm sayin'...  )
