Renewed Kumata brass request N scale- any help?

I have not made this request in a long time.

I've made progress on my book on Kumata brass in N scale.

Called:
The Kumata Primer:  An N Scale Brass Guide by Ron Bearden

Many of you on this board helped me (thanks).  I have actually held in my hands and studied almost every KMT brass example.

But I could still use a few more.

I would love for someone to loan me the following locomotives if you have them- or can put me in contact with someone who has them....
Your help will contribute greatly to the book.

--Hallmark RSD4/5
--Hallmark RS1
--Sunset Trainmaster in the NON-Pennsy version with no antennas.
--NJ Custom Brass Pennsy MP54 Commuter cars/set.  THIS one is the greatest need.    YAY!  Thanks Allen  This has been the hardest.
--NJ Custom Brass Silverliner in Reading scheme (only 30 were made)- just need to only photograph this one.
--NJ Custom Brass NH Washboard in the orange and white McGuiness scheme (original or add-on sets)- just need to only photograph this one.
--Kumata 2000 EP-2 bi-polar (not the one sold by NJ in the 1980s).  I doubt I'd ever see another since they were only sold in Japan.  I have photos of these, and the one I have was the last one and appears to be a factory reject.  So I'd love to actually hold/run another.  Though I'm not expecting anyone to risk sending me one all the way from Japan.

As always, the deal is:
--I will pay all shipping from and back to you.
--Permission to lovingly remove the shell so I can study and photo it.
--Permission to run on a track for only a few minutes to see how well/bad it runs.
--If you want, I will improve it for free.   I know a lot about these locos and most people like me to make them run better (most run absolutely horribly).  But if you prefer, I will do nothing.
--I'll give you a thanks acknowledgement in the introduction.

The reason for actually holding these locos in my hands is because each and every time I assume I know all there is to know about these.... and I get another loco I haven't seen before-- I discover something new.  Kumata seems to have tweaked almost every one.  So I have learned not to assume.

Book status.   The survey is completed (but still hoping for the locos I requested above).  It is about 70 pages.
The tweaks and improvements section is slowly being written.
When completed, I'm thinking the book will be about 100 pages with hundreds of color photos.

When I began this many years ago, I was expecting to give away a free 30 page PDF.   But this has grown much much larger than that.
I'll probably have this printed and charge only a very modest amount.

You can contact me by PM here.

Thanks for reading.

And since text is boring, here is a shot of one I worked on:

Hey Ron,

I have a couple of the Hallmark RSD4/5's. And - yes, they are terrible runners.

I offer one for your project.

Regards,
Wolf

Thanks for thinking of me.

But I'm good with the NJ Bi-polar.
Repaired several and have one in mint condition now (I scored with that one).

Thanks.

Is that Rocky in the window after one of his fights? Looks like Mick needs to tend to his eye again.

Well, Wolf and I struck out on his RSD-4/5.

I told him to "pick the worst one" and send it to me and I would see how well I could do getting it running again.

Wrong choice of words.

He DID!   :scared:

He sent me a custom painted RSD-4/5 that he painted and detailed for SP.
It's gorgeous.  He did a fabulous job.  Two thumbs up!

He said he had not really looked at it in 20 or so years.

Well, when I took it out of the box.... I had that terrible  Uh-Oh feeling.   :|

The trucks were locked up.  They would not even move.
And I knew what that meant.

The dreaded Zamac degradation.
Most Kumata locos made in the 80's and 1990 survived this fairly well, except one group--- and that's the ALCO group from 1984.

It took a bit of work, but I finally got it apart without destroying it.

And this is what I found.

Unfortunately, this is damaged beyond repair.  The only solution to help this gorgeous locomotive and save it from permanent static display would be to find someone who has a rare one that has the trucks in perfect condition- and then attempt to cast a new frame out of a tough alloy.
(I've done that with some gearboxes.)

Wolf said he had a couple more RSDs if he can dig them out.
Not sure what he will discover when he finds them. - hopefully they won't be as bad as this one.

Anyway..... I guess I should revise my request....

Does anyone have a RUNNING RSD-4/5 that I can borrow?

Looks like a perfect reason for a 3D replacement truck frame, you can even have it printed in brass.

Ah the infamous zinc pest.
Couldn't a plastic model's mechanism be adapted to be used with the brass shell?  I would probably run much better than the brass model's mechanism.

Well sure.
There's no question that a well insulated Atlas mechanism would probably work.

On my one day to-do list is to finish placing an OMI AC6000 shell on a Kato chassis.

Yeah.

But I wouldn't know how to begin.

I have 3-D printed caps on my back teeth.  My dentist has a wand that he waved over my tooth to scan the outside dimensions into the computer.

Man, I wish I had one of those!

"Well insulated" is the key.  Years ago W&R(?) made a brass N scale F45.  Being a BN/GN modeler, I bought 4 of them.  Couldn't keep them on the track, even after relaying the track.  A Kato SD40 chassis fit perfectly, and they stayed on the track very nicely.  All I had to do was use plenty of electrical tape to prevent sorts - split frames don't play well with brass bodies!

I still have them.  They fit in very nicely with my Athearn F45s, and the speed matches the Kato SD40/45s and U30Cs perfectly.
