2. invest in a good, temperature controlled iron
3. look for lead solder, you will thank me
4. simple rules for cleaning the parts
5. some pointers on heat transfer, beyond "heat both parts until solder flows"

Well, first I don't know if it's appropriate to suggest, or create, so was lamely trying to ask that question.

I think I could make a good start, and with the help of others could make it a good FAQ, but know nothing about the "rules" or "charter" of this forum.

Something I've learned recently - it's possible for your iron to be too hot!  I was having problem keeping my tip tinned (this is for soldering electronics), and eventually discovered that if the iron is too hot the rosin paste flux will burn onto the iron rather than boil off.  After that the iron can't transfer heat fast enough to work right.

Yes.  I've move this to Scratchbuilding and try to explain things.

I use a old Weller 40W I've had for years. I also use the nastiest acid flux I could find. It came with the Micro Mark silver bearing solder. Yes to much heat is a killer, that's why I let my iron cool down between each joint I solder. BTW, I'm talking about soldering brass. I also clean the tip and tin it too. It takes more time, but you don't have to re-do. I use the silver solder to solder stainless roof walks.
