REAZ/XTRZ pig trailer lettering - 1970s

So I'm starting to work on a piggyback fleet for my LV Apollo-1 and 2 hotshots.  Based on research here and there, I need a bunch of plain-vanilla leased 40-foot trailers, particularly REAX and XTRZ.

I have been unable to locate suitable decals, but I am prepared to draw up the artwork.  Problem is, I don't know the exact size of the reporting marks.  Closest I can determine is 6" tall lettering, but if anyone has an exact reference I would greatly appreciate it!

Example REAZ trailer:

Example XTRZ trailer:

I can't help you with the actual size.  One suggestion would be to measure the picture.  Determine the ratio of the trailer side height to the lettering height.  Then use that ratio and the model trailer to match the lettering to the model.  Even if the actual height is wrong, it would be in proportion, so would look right.

Measuring the REAZ trailer on my screen (not the easiest!)  and assuming the trailer is 9.5 feet high (48 inch kingpin height, roof level when attached to tractor) I got 5.7 inches.  Since that seems unlikely, I would say 5 or 6 inch letters, with 6 inch the most likely.

Second try:  AAR interchange rules (1977) call for 3 inch weight lettering.  Measuring the "C" in CAPY and the "5" at the end of the number, almost in line, gives about the same answer, 5.6 inches.  Maybe they ARE 5.5 to 5.75 inches after all.

Given the errors likely in using a ruler marked in 64ths of an inch to measure a picture, not taken straight-on, on a computer screen, that the two answers match is surprising.

Can't help with the decals, but do you need 40' trailers ?  I have a handful of ConCor 40' trailers that don't fit my era (modern, need 53's)

@nkalanaga, thx for the AAR reference!  It jives with my pixel-guesstimation using the trailer height as a starting point.

@mu26aeh, thx for the offer, but I am good-to-go with trailers.  The recent Athearn and Trainworx models are what I have on hand.

If you can, hunt down a copy of David Casdorph's Modern Piggyback Trailers - quite a large spread on Transamerica and XTRA trailers with a few photos taken in the 80s of those schemes. It may be of help.

James, thx for the reference!  I have used Dave's materials in the past, most recently his Trailer Train book - it is outstanding.

In research I've been realizing that I need some of these "plain" trailers - google brought me back here lol.

Anyone have any luck with these decals?

Microscale makes an assorted set that has the XTRA (60-233) - but only enough to do one (1) trailer. :-X

Can anyone point me to any better photos of these particular trailers? Are the available Fruehauf 40 footers (MTL or Athearn) reasonable standins for these?

Thanks!

Mark
