Swapping Chassis on E units
« on: December 16, 2017, 01:14:02 PM »

I find nothing in the archives about this, so I ask here.  Has anyone fit a LL E unit shell on a BLI E unit chassis? I am most interested in swapping the E6 B unit. I understand the A-units have more issues because of the different shapes of the inside of the shells.

Thanks,

Bob Witt

I understand you might be using the LL shell to retain the paint job; I don't know how the BLI and LL shells compare dimensionally so can't answer your question....
....but I would like to point out something I don't think anyone has ever noticed about the N Scale BLI E6B tooling:
All previous plastic E6B units (in both HO and N) have simply used an E7B body.
Broadway Limited actually tooled the N E6B body which has a different window configuration than the E7B.
Also, the N BLI  E6A has two different locations for the first window behind the cab per the prototype (not sure why the varied...maybe to accommodate the ATSF warbonnet although other roads had the same version).

I have put a LL Seaboard E-6A on a BLI mechanism.
Worked without problems, I think I had to file a little of the LL headlight „pipe“ to get it to sit level on the BLI.
But really minimal effort.

I have hardwired the LL B-unit to the BLI A to have reliable pickup.

Cheers
