Changing From N&W to L&N

I was going to model the N&W with an interchange with Southern Railway in 1967, but after looking at railroad maps, I saw very few interchange possibilities between the two railroads. So, after looking at various railroads to replace the N&W, I stumbled upon the L&N. Since I had 2 GP35s, a U25B, an RS3 and an NW2 to be decaled for the N&W, I found L&N had those locos too. That clinched it for me, that and the fact that MB Klein had Athearn L&N bay window cabooses in stock and Microscale had correct L&N loco decals.

That said, I'll have some more N&W 100 ton hoppers to sell, and I'll be looking for some Atlas L&N 90-ton hoppers to take their place.

Hmm... Kiz's life is so
complicated...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

Still 1967?  I never liked the grey/yellow scheme but at least the early version is pretty easy to paint.  That later version with all the pin striping... .

You could paint your RS3 in the green ex rutland scheme they wore in the 1960s

Some Roco 2 bay PS-3's would add some variety:

Atlas released this scheme within the past year.

L&N is cool too Kis, 8)

Although I have to point out that N&W had plenty of interchange with SOUTHERN.

Off the top of my head, here's a few:

o Norton Va
o Bristol TN
0 Lynchburg VA

I was going by railroad maps (supposedly from 1967, but probably not) of the 2 railroads.

Hmm... another one of

shot down...

Five more...

Winston - Salem, N.C.
Durham, N.C.
Cincinnati, Mo.
Burkeville, Va.
South Boston, Va.

and, indirectly, Danville, Va., via N&W subsidiary, Norfolk Franklin & Danville, formerly Atlantic & Danville,
and, indirectly, Harrisonburg, Va., via N&W subsidiary, Chesapeake Western.

Bristol was a key coal interchange with coal off the N&W being handed off from there.  It also marked the interchange point for several passenger trains back in the day.

The Atlantic & Danville was notable as using, during the 60s, some FM H16-44s on loan from N&W to operate some of their trains, along with ALCO T6s and GPs after it became NF&D.  Also known was at least one C&O Geep and some ALCO S2s, though I don't know if this was before or after the acquisition.  The line also obtained four ex-NKP RS11s which replaced six ALCO RS2s. The CHW used three ALCO T6s handed down by the N&W to replace three VO660s.  Those DS660s were sharp in blue and gray paint with yellow trim and lettering.

My favorite L&N and Southern interchange was Murphy, NC. The swapped pulpwood, lumber, sand, and aggregate to name a few. Tracks were abandoned and removed in 1982. Bridge piers are still in place, but only remnant of the line is a short spurt from Murphy Junction to Mineral Springs, GA.
