Various photos of N&W class G5 gondola:

Removing the crappy underframe, toy trucks, and cheesy coal load would be the first step in turning a useless toy into a functional freight car model that nobody else offers...

I thought this was a copy of the Atlas or Model Power 40' gon. Both of which would take a lot less effort to convert. The glue used in these and the Bachmann gons  with coal load would melt and deform the interior.

The High Speed "coal car" is longer than a 40' gondola and has 12 side panels (vs. 8 panels on either the Atlas or Bachmann 40' gons)

It's also not as long as a 50' gon, but I haven't had a chance to measure one to know what to call it...

Regarding the coal load, both the coal load and the underframe are held together by way of a single screw on the bottom of the car.

The good news is that this "sandwich" assembly negates the need for any messy glue to hold either of them in place, but the bad news is that this leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the gondola floor after the coal load and underframe have been tossed in the nearest dumpster.

Now that you mention it, it does looks like a copy of the Model Power 45' gondola...

It is a copy of the Lima 45' gondola which was also sold by Model Power.

As stated above the Lima 46' car is fairly close to the N&W G5.

Avoid the China Model Power versions as they were "improved" with cast on brakewheels. :o

Speaking of Model Power, when I was looking over the MRC booth at the Springfield show I saw a display showing a complete set of Model Power cars re-released by MRC.  Still the same toy-like cars.  What really surprised me was the price.  It was in hundreds of dollars!  I should have taken a photo.

High Speed also copied that "improvement"

I also noticed that the diameter of the hole in the floor (on the High Speed gon) is pretty close to the width of the side panels where cutting out that section of the car should make a shorter 11 panel car similar to a 41' AAR gondola...
