Scalecoat: Interesting tidbit

I paint outside - and left a can of Scalecoat II out in the rain....

The label washed off - and there was another label:

"OmniPak Master Blend EZ-touch"   "Top Superior Solvent Blend"

Great,  that is the empty refillable spray can they used. Now if you could only find what paint they filled with . . .

This seems to indicate that they mixed their own colors and then filled those aerosol cans in-house.

Explain this:

http://www.custom-aerosol.com/pdf/msds-dv16-can.pdf

:?  The MSDS describes the contents as only propellants and solvents - no resin binders or pigments (which are the "meat" of paints). Solvents are the stuff which evaporates leaving pigment encapsulated in binder on the painted surface.  I'm not even sure if the MSDS is for the sprays Scalecoat uses. I didn't think Scalecoat II has any acetone in it.  But I never used aerosols - just the bottled paints.

EDIT:  It seems that acetone listed in the MSDS is just one of the ingredients of the propellant included in the can. But I also looked over the website where you found this MSDS and they offer custom matched touch-up paints.  Maybe Scalecoat paints were manufactured there.  But then again, Weaver might still have made their own paints and just filled the aerosol cans themselves.

Scalecoat's own site says that the reason that some of the spray colors were unavailable was that their machine couldn't get the paint into the cans, so yes, they filled their own.  It didn't make sense to me, since it had worked in the past, but here's part of their reply to an email from me, in Jan 2014.  Obviously it never got fixed!

"We are not discontinuing them, some of the colors listed are very difficult to get into the cans for some unknown reason. The manufacturer of the filling machine can’t come up with an explanation. We are working on the problem. Sorry for the inconvience."  (Their misspelling)

Very.  I wouldn't think that the colors would be that different physically, so they should all go into the cans the same.  With the announcement that they're closing I wonder if they had already quit filling cans, and were trying to sell off the remaining stock?

I ordered a final batch last Saturday, the 13th.  My previous two orders were confirmed in 4 and 5 days, respectively, but I haven't heard a thing about this one.  All were sent through their order page on a Saturday.  I wonder if they're swamped with emergency orders?

You know, this makes me wonder why Weaver Models wouldn't sell their proprietary paint formulas to somebody since they are closing up anyway.  It may or may not being in a good profit, but somebody might want that data in order to
duplicate and sell the colors in another paint product, and they certainly aren't worth anything to
the current owner just sitting in a notebook when he retires.     I can always hope.

Is it that they WOULDN'T sell the formula, or the company, or that there were no buyers?  I didn't see anything on their website either way.

The owner tried to sell the company, but no one was even interested.
