three five elevinis and other modes of communication.

I am writing this for peteski and in another thread
because I don't really want to have this discussion
in the u18b bi-polar fix/model-fest thread.

hi Peteski,

please take my word for this....
I know what I said and meant was not heard as I intended.

I will give this another try and after that I will quit this round.

in general and in this forum when anyone asks "why are you doing..."

it gets received as a question of "why bother?"
as an example "why are you adding brake rigging under that skirted tender."
or "why spend the time making a lightboard when the original one is good."

it is not the question that is the direct problem,
it is the discouragement included in the question.

frankly, I doubt I'd add brake rigging under a skirted tender
and I would like to see how others do it.

I see two different questions there however...

Back when I was a kid in the local N trak club I used to get the "Why bother" response to a project all the time, this was discouraging and led to me being no longer a member.

However using your lightboard example, a question like that may help reveal the thought process behind someones decisions, there is a why beyond "just because." There is a reason why it isn't just as good for the individual and it may be illuminating to know why.

Hi Misaberoad,

take my word for it.

the light board question will be received as exactly the same 'why bother' and the first example

you may want to take into the considerations the fact that the replacement was undertaken.
For any reason the original was found wanting,  the one doing the project
is very likely to be aware of the various qualities of the original.

thus the potential of being seen as a discouragement.

I am not saying do not ask "why?"  I am pointing out that one has to be VERY careful when asking it.

That statement I will agree with fully, choosing ones words carefully will definitely avoid a mis-step there.
...being said however there is value in knowing the motivation behind a decision, perhaps not for the modeler presenting his work, but for the rest of us reading possibly wondering.
