FVM H30 PRR truck swap

Finally had a chance to look over my H-30 hoppers by FVM. The fine detail on these models is exquisite and superior to that on the recently-shipped H-32’s from Broadway Limited.  According to Rob’s PRR website, the first 100 built (freightcar color CK versions) should be riding on Crown trucks. I was able to re-equip mine using Bowser trucks leftover from a H-21 project I had done earlier. Just carefully clip off the Rapido couplers and drill out the bolster to 1/8” or so to fit the FVM pin. Reinsert the eensy screws that secure the trucks and you’re done.

I was about to put Atlas Andrews trucks on mine, but like this better. Does Bowser sell trucks?

The detail on the Bowser trucks is too soft for my liking. I much prefer the Atlas Andrews truck frames. The only other issue of concern between the various trucks is getting the ride height correct. FVM bases their bolster height on the MTL trucks. So, depending upon whether or not the FVM truck on the H30 has an offset bolster hole or not, the MTL Andrews truck also may be a viable option.

One last observation — N scale truck frames historically have been too wide. The newest ASF and Barber trucks tooled for the BLMA, FVM, Trainworx and high-end Atlas models are noticeably closer to scale width.

Hi Bryan   The height of the car does not change when using the Bowser trucks. In the pic, the car to the immediate left is a new-style Atlas 8' door PS-1. As may be seen, the couplers match perfectly.  FYI, the apparent axle width on the Bowsers is 0.553". I ran out of 33" wheels in this width, or the FVM wheels would be on mine.  Cheers, Harry

BTW - unlike, say early Con-cor, the Bowser trucks are delicately constructed and are the same width over the journal boxes as today's BLMA 70-ton ASF A3s.
