So, I stumbled across these the other day:

http://store.sbs4dcc.com/SBS4DCCNScaleL-F6W-MT-BKYFlatWheelWiper.aspx

Basically, phosphor bronze wiper sets that are custom-made to fit a wide variety of N Scale trucks.
The above link are for the ones that fit the Microtrains Buckeye 6-wheel trucks..  You have to put metal wheelsets
into the trucks, install these wipers, with fine flex wire soldered to them and run up into the tender.

Nobody "loves" wipers.  But they do ride on the backs of the wheels instead of the axles, and they are phosphor bronze, so I expect they would work pretty well.

Has anyone tried these?   I am thinking this is another potential fix to getting more pickup wheels working
in a LL Berkshire (or any tender, that doesn't have axle-point pickup, really).

Why is the back of the wheels better than axle wipers?
The one on the back of the wheel will create more rolling resistance than an axle-wiper.  A wheel wiper will probably also wear out quicker  (the distance the wheel wiper travels is much greater per wheel revolution than an equivalent axle wiper). Axle wipers also create less friction (rolling resistance).

The only advantage is for when only one wheel is insulated and the other wheel and axle are connected electrically. Then a wheel wiper is needed for the insulated wheel.

Brings back memories of my Mehano fleet in the early 70s ... (The trucks used wiper pickup on the backs of the wheels).

I'm skeptical but I guess in some cases its all we have to work with.

I'd have to think the Wally/LL Berkshire trucks would be better in this case.

Exactly... because unless the truck has Kato style wheelsets, you have to ride on the wheels to get all-wheel pickup.
And even if it does have Kato caboose/tender wheelsets(which you can still buy), it might be very tricky
to join the two halves through a plastic tube and still have some metal axle on each end exposed enough
to ride a wiper.

And because, according to my personal preference, as long as the wheels still roll, I would gladly trade some extra
rolling friction for large surfaces touching between the wiper and the wheel, so I'm hoping those larger surfaces riding on the backs might work better than an axle wiper.

Remember, this is for those pain-in-the-neck cases where we don't have all-wheel tender trucks.

Bought
a shed load to convert Athearn C-50-9 cabeese with Digitrax LT1 lighting/transponding. Done several and the conversion to insulated 4-40 bolster screws made much difference. A layer of Kapton tape between the layers of metal allows two on each truck, meaning both sides to pick up and reduce flicker and false readings. The drag is not all that noticeable although it probably reduces any 'slinky' action frustration...
