You need to shake the bejeezus out out of the can before and during spraying!  Another reason I prefer airbrushing the stuff. I can clearly see 9in the airbrush jar) whether the flattening agent has settled down or is still suspended in the liquid.  There also might be a compatibility issue with the underlying paint.

I have not tried anything else but Dull Cote. I have used an air brush but switched to a rattle can and still get good results. Air brush took too much time to clean when only doing one car.
I spray outside when the weather is quite warm. Then leave the model outside for a while to get rid of the smell.
I am cautious about using Tamiya clear as I'm told it can ruin decals!
We have to purchase Dull Cote when it is available as shipping to OZ takes time and not always available.
