Got it twice again this morning...  Unfortunately it also paralyzes the browser such that you have to kill it using force quit (Mac) or the task manager.

Oooo. I've not seen what you're talking about - the Java update notice I got was normal and could be bypassed. However, it did sort of indicate there was something present on the site doing something new or unusual that needed the newer version. Is there possibly an ad in the rotation with a payload? That's going to be a bugger to nail down.

Can you give me a little more information as to what the popup exactly says or a screen shot?

Could it be coming from another tab that you might have opened?

I'll take a screen shot next time, but no...  It's not from another tab.  I had it happen when it was the *only* tab.

I also got the pop up to update to Internet Explorer.  I am on a MAC, and just closed the site, then ran Disk Doctor to clean everything up.  Have not seen it again….yet.

Ah, the Open Software Updater thingie!

Do a Google search for that.   I had to deal with this crap on my friend's PC about a month ago.

Open Software Updater is a PUP (potentially unwanted program)/adware that may result in a variety of computer problems on a PC.

Open Software updater is a Google problem?  Really?  My friend's PC got "infected" with that thing and I had to spend some time purging it from his machine.  The screen shot shows Open Software Updater. Unless MVW actually has installed and uses Open Software Updater thingie.

Then I don't understand how this coudl be a Chrome problem. The screen capture seems to show that Open Software Updater somehow got installed on Jim's machine.  How could Chrome be blamed for that?  Or is that just some rogue ad Chrome displays?

That is the same screen as I got with IE.11. As previously reported, I got it one time yesterday going to the RW forum and it was the only tab I had open. I don't have any malware or viruses on my laptop.

Anything embedded in one of the various images in the header of the forum or the scrolling advertisements?

What is Opensoftwareupdater.com?

Opensoftwareupdater.com is distributing software updater such as displaying you "Your software may be out of data" or similar pop-up and suggest you to download the recommended item, but if you accept the Terms and Privacy Policy and agree to install the download, your will get the Air installer on your computer which will manage the installation of the selected software and pop-up you a lot of useless items that may include toolbars, browser add-ons, game applications, anti-virus applications and other types of applications which seems good but turned out to be adware or spyware program.

The Opensoftwareupdater.com pop-up is a sign of an adware type of infection. It is a fake and deceptive pop-up which was taken by cyber criminals to trick you into downloading potentially unwanted programs such as malware program, adware program and other mores. The purpose of the Opensoftwareupdater.com pop-up is to increase download, sells and ads revenue. When you get the Opensoftwareupdater.com pop-up and agree to download and install the recommended software, the distributor may get bonus revenue while you will get other unwanted program installed on your computer automatically which can be a potentially threat to your system.

That still doesn't explain:

1)  Why I've seen it on both Mac and PC and...

2)  Why I've only ever seen that on this site and nowhere else.

Yeah, I've only seen it here as well ... and I didn't see it at all yesterday, even through I weeded my way through several threads. A day or two prior to that, it was popping up every 1-2 pages.
