Hans Riddervold shared this video of his Southern River Crossing layout in operation. The layout has been built by Karl Sinn. Yes, everything you see is Z. The trains are from American Z Line. The craftsmanship of the scenery is incredible!

superb modeling indeed!

only thing to my eye, those bridges seem rather light weight for heavy modern trains, but that's just my proto police a-hat at work, not to trying to take away anything from the modeling work.

True, they do, but even today's passenger trains are lighter than most freight trains, in terms of weight/foot, or whatever they use to measure bridge strength.  Maybe this is a detour, and the usual traffic is light freight?

Great job on the scenery, though.  It looks a lot like places around here KY/WV, and even the colors match the winter season.

I'm truly impressed both by the breath taking scene work and the train's performance. No chance of me going Z, even N is tough enough. Do Not Get Old.

Z runs very nicely, as long as you can keep the track and wheels clean.  That's even more important than in N, due to the lack of weight - and space for it.

Marklin is now making some locos from metal-filled plastic, getting the detail of injection molding and the weight of metal.  I haven't bought one, so don't know how well it works.  MY Z experience is with powering Nn3 models, and the ones I have are mostly decades old.  The newest are ten years!

Not just metal-filled plastic. I worked on a Marklin Z scale loco last year, and the entire shell (including the cab) was made for regular diecast metal (Zamak?).

Some Minitrix and Fleischmann models of European prototype have diecast shells that have details just as fine as injection-molded plastic.

Fantastic layout! Modelling these quite authentic looking deciduous winter trees is already a remarkable feat in itself. And there are 1624 of them :o on this layout, according to the description on Hans Sinn's website...

The scenery truly is incredible.  Has Karl Sinn published any articles? I tried googling, found references to layouts he had built and a couple photos, but no links for videos or techniques.

He does have a (german only) website with lots of photos and descriptions of his layouts: http://www.spur-z-atelier.de/. See in particular buttons "Messestand & Anlagen" and "Referenzen".

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks! Bookmarked that site, and the google translator seems to work remarkably well.  And as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Peteski:  Most, if not all, of the early Marklin Z steam locos had diecast shells.  A real pain to modify for Nn3, but they did add needed weight.

The article I saw, in Trainini magazine, dealt with diesel and electric models, where they've generally used plastic shells in the past.

Ed @ednadolski , I agree.  Although the modeling is really nice, and the trains are running incredibly smoothly, the first thing I noticed was the spindly look of the bridges.  Kinda ironic to have something look "spindly" in Z-scale!

Cheerio!
