Rowa 2-8-8-2 smoker

Does anyone know if the Rowa/ Atlas/ Mrc has a micrometers wire inside the smoker unit ? I have one and the wire was disconnected some 40 years ago and was wondering how these actually worked and if testing it electrically how should I go about testing it? Thanks for your input .

you have a rare beast.
If I said please don't bother giving it a trial, is there any chance you won't?

You can wire it up. it uses a lot of power and you will get whisps of smoke if it works at all.

I think smoke kinds works on O scale stuff and is not worth the effort for HO.
in n-scale.... nope.

Thanks for your speedy reply I ment to say Nichrome not micrometer so you suggest not hooking the wire up? I bought this awhile back because it was a smoker and Arnold is the only other manufacturer that offered a smoker, and also if I do decide to hook it up what te of fluid should I use ? Thanks again.

The "smokers" were made by Seuthe, the Rowa ones IIRC tended to get damaged easily. The particular unit in the Rowa/Bemo is not made anymore however Seuthe smoke units of other varieties are still available.

Wow!  A smoker!  I remember I was really excited when (as a teenager) I installed a Seuthe smoke generator in one of my TT gauge steam locos. I had some fun with it, but looking back it was very unrealistic. It was also very messy (oily stuff everywhere) and stinky.  Oh the memories...

Yep that is a rare beast, I’m jealous.  I have an old Hornby Triang steamer that uses Hornby's R.521 smoke oil.  You may find some knocking around on that action site?

On a side note, if you wanted to add a Micro-Trains N scale or Z scale coupling to the front I do a replacement pilot for that loco.

I was at my LHS and seen some smoke liquid i think mth mad it but it came in different scents from lemon pie to coal and BBQ ,vanilla, wood , cinnamon and I forget what else , am I able to use this ?

 All smoke units use heat to make smoke,so any smoke oil will work.Believe it or not,aspirins work too...I seem to remember some Lionels has the lightbulb under the stack,the oil just burned off the bulb,LOL!!

I have one of these 2-8-8-2 smoker made by Rowa for Rapido Item #2883B, M instructions say to use onlySeuthe smoke fluid.
The stack would be filled using needle type filler tube and instructed place filler tube into the stack very carefully, inside the stack there is a heating element, be careful not to damage it. Theating element is in a tube which stands in the center of the smoke stack. Yoou insert the filling tube between the heating element and the rim of the smoke stack, do not fill above the top of the heating element. This would flood the heating element and delay the smoke.Loco should run for over an hour before it is necessary to re-fill the fluid again. Do not run the loco without smoke fluid unless you have the power wire to the smoker disconnected.
I still have the orignal case, instructions and special instructions for the smoking mallet from Arnold Rapido and Charles C. Merzbach Company , inc.
Unit is still in excellent condition,bought new in the 70's from the Sal Merino Co. in NJ.

I'm looking at a Sal Marino ad from the June 1975 Railroad Model Craftsman magazine. Yep, SMC was on Staten Island, not in New Jersey.

Damrr would you happen to have a picture of the element looking down the smoke stack it would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Sorry but I donot have a photo looking down the stack, I just looked with a led flashlight & magnifier, looks like there is a small tube maby about 1/16"Dia. at center of stack, that tube has a very small coil hot wire in the center of the tube, coil is wound very tight, not much space between coil and sides of tobe, center opening of coil is very very small, that is why Sluth smoke I had was a capsule with a very small metal tube or needle,
best to put smoke liquid between tube and coil but be very careful not to break the coil, it is easy to break. Hope this helps.
