I also spent some time experimenting with making trees.  I need a bunch of lodgepole pine for the layout.

All the new track is in except for the ramp. (Paint Drying)

Finished detailing a pair of IM 40-footers, to be finished as EL rebuilds.  The first one represents a 1941 build, with 5/5 ends and panel roof:


This one represents a late-40's build, with R+3/4 ends (modified the kit ends) and Stanray diagonal roof:


I added the reinforced side sill on both, and used BLMA grabs and short brass ladders on the A ends.  Paint and decals next!

I'll try to remember everything I did,I picked at it little by little over the past year..... This model was already "weathered" when I started, sort of a "spray can roll by" type of job, not unlike what the Athearn weathered releases looked like...

I used Gouache for all of the recent work on this model, mixing my own colors on a waxed paper plate....on the roof,I started with a dark red/purple-ish in the center of the rust patches, then "halo" this with dark brown, then rusty brown...I then sealed with dullcote, then taped the "seams" of the roof and painted them with a light grey... I left the end panels rust free, and just gave then some grime....

The sides got a Gouache wash, and then rust scratches using the edge of a piece of paper dipped in dark brown, and when these were dry I used a rusty brown to drag streaks down....a small brush dipped in water blended this a little,..Based on some photos I saw, I then started picking at the lettering with an X-acto, to reveal "un-weathered" yellow ghost lettering. This was not planned, but sorta worked, and I would like to try it again.......then I used some light blue and pink over the original logo, to fade it... ....and the graffiti is a Blair Line decal .... chalks were used along the way too, to blend any harsh colors....

I hope this helps, this wasn't even a planned project, it was on the bench to get some trucks/couplers/wheels because I had stolen this cars trucks for another project....I think I will top it off with some wire stirrups, etched end platforms and brake wheel, and maybe some body mounted Z scale couplers...

Hopefully someday, as an injection-molded and diecast RTR model.  The upcoming GSC well car proves it's possible to get enough weight in a well car model and have the center of gravity low enough to run the car empty anywhere in a long consist.  But truck swing is an issue with this model.  Currently, it won't run on less than 18" radius I think ... which works for me personally but not for most people.  I have some ideas on how to rectify it without compromising the appearance, and I'll explore that if it ever gets to that point.  For now, I decided to finish the hand-built pilot model.

Are you using the sawdust/glue mixture for the trunk?

I actually used "sanded" caulk.   The kind used to match tile grout.  After it dried I painted it and dusted it with weathering chalk.

Well, I finally decided today was the day to correct some of the issues that have bothered me with the layout since I built it.
Here is an early shot showing how the tracks exit the tunnel on the lower section.

I always thought that Gulf Summit, Susquehanna Valley layout, from the Atlas Nine N Scale Model Railroads was an interesting plan. Like you, the one aspect of the plan I never liked was, the two tunnels and sharp curves associated with those two tunnels, in order to run the tracks along the river and below the stone viaduct. Have you given any thought to using a double track tunnel with your new track arrangement? Looking forward to your updated photos of the layout.

I looked at that image detail page, but not reading German, missed that the town name was there.  I can usually puzzle out "railroad German", from reading about Swiss narrow gauge lines, but that's about as far as I can go without a translation site or dictionary.
