There are some examples of compound ladders in certain circumstances. This adaptation of Sunnyside Yard is pretty close to the real deal:

Here's a Google Map of the Brunswick B&O yard, with a simple ladder on the west and a compound ladder on the east. (I think the B&O has a prototype for just about any track configuration you want to model: switch in a tunnel, switch on a bridge, bridge at tunnel entrance, yeah, they got those, too.)
Niagara Falls, NY Has a large yard with a compound ladder the west end (maybe both ends). Built by NYC (maybe PC) in the mid/late 1960s...I'll try to post a pic tonight.~Ian
