Does It Matter Which Brake Wheels I Use?

I have some of Athearn's 50' tank cars and 40' open hoppers that need brake wheels. I tried Athearn's website, but the only parts they list for N scale are 36" and 33" metal wheels.

I checked the Micro-Trains' site and found "Ajax" and "Miner" type brake wheels. Does anyone know which style is best for which cars? Thanks for any help.

Hmm... I don't know.
Nobody knows...

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

The Ajax would probably be ok for the tank cars.  The open end hoppers could have had either depending on their road, manufacturers and era.

And, if you only have one of a car for a particular road, it could have almost anything, if it was repaired off-line.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll put Ajax wheels on the tank cars and Miner wheels on the open hoppers. Or maybe I'll put a couple Ajax wheels on the hoppers, or...

Hmm... I wish I could
put a brake wheel on

I used the miner brake wheels on my 50' tank cars, as they more closely matched the prototype photos I have taken.

Thanks for all the replies. I have both types in my shopping cart.

Depends on how accurate to the prototype you want to be.  Other than that — any brakewheel style from the same era as the model would look fine, and only the rivet-counters would be able to tell if it is an incorrect style.

...and according to "Ed's Law" any brakewheel that might be laying around a car shop might be applied to any car that needs one at any given time...

Prototype photos are really your best instruction.  If you find a photo of your particular road number that falls into your time frame, that's the only way to feel like you're absolutely spot on.  Otherwise, Bryan's advice, as always, is sound.

Lee:  Not only is that "Ed's Law", it really is the way it works.  Fix it and get it back to work, never mind if it matches.  If it's a foreign road shop the new wheel may even be a different color.  The same thing goes for boxcar doors, covered hopper roof hatches, ladders and grabs, etc.
