What are you using to determine if it's an ASF or Barber?

I used several references including descriptions of the parts, conversations with manufacturers, matching models to prototype photos, and asking people more knowledgeable than myself on the subject. If you find any inconsistencies, please let me know and I will update the list accordingly.

I can tell you that Barber doesn't refer to a specific sideframe design.  It refers to how the friction wedges are sprung (Ride Controls have constant spring pressure on the wedges, Barbers have variable, spring pressure, increasing as the bolster goes downward ).  ASF for example used the same sideframe for either it's own Ride Control and the Barbers.  Scullin also used the same sideframe, albeit a slightly different design than the ASF, for either a Ride Control or Barber.

Since I just arrived here (from the now defunct Atlas forum), I'm snooping around and I found this thread. I think it is worth mentioning that this info (from Daniel) has been combined with info provided by other modelers (including your truly) into a much larger collection of  info about N scale trucks.  I figured that I would bring this up here (as nobody else has mentioned this yet).
