You folks are probably aware, but just in case not, there's a centipede, a like-new K-4S and a weathered H-9 or -10 (I can't tell); as well as some K-4 parts.

Harry

[Thanks for the H-8 ID, folks. Obviously, PRR steam identification is not my strong point.   H.]

I believe the weathered steam engine is an H8 by the description, but I am not exactly "well-versed" in PRR steam. That K4s has been on there for a while, and is always re-listed with a new price each time. There was also a DD1 on there recently. I wonder who got that...

As discussed many times on this board, Centipedes are 100% cr@p.  They are quite honestly one of the poorest designed locos in N scale.  And that is saying something since I admit I'm a fan of Kumata brass locos.

They look great, but numerous talented people have been unable to get them to run decent using pretty much the stock parts.   Those that have one that runs well (like the Starmans) had the skill and talent to repower theirs.

It's an H8. As evidenced by the lack of excess piping and such on the boiler.

The K4 was previously listed with a $315 opening bid and a $450 buy it now price.  Either the photo is bad, the paint job is bad or there is something on the finish (oil?).  As much as would like a nice K4 and may kick myself for passing on a chance to have bought it for only $315, the finish didn't look right.

The K4 parts auctions that ended yesterday sold for some ridiculous prices (>$100).

Scott,
Those PCS K4s models are great looking in person, but at certain angles, it makes them look "funny." I do agree with the general conscensious that the paint is "off," and heavily applied. The one I have has the decals falling off, but other than that, I am happy with it. The main problem with them is really the running characteristics. If it were not for the fact that there was a DD1 for less money, I probably would have picked up that K4s.

Well, the running characteristics, and the fact that many of them have the word "Pennsylvania" painted crooked on the tender
and the cab number is crooked also.   I don't know if they are all that way, but many are, and the 3 I have here for repairs
all have crooked lettering.   That really hurts the appearance.

The PRR 2-8-0 with #8014 is a H10. We had two of those before we sold one. The H8 we have has #7475 and the H9 #1132. I may be wrong, but I haven't seen any other numbers on the Key 2-8-0's.

I agree that it hurts the appearance, but I do not believe that all had crooked lettering. The lettering on my 3770 is nice and straight, but is fading/coming off. The previous owner did work to mine that makes it run very well, but the pilot spring needs to be stretched so that the pilot truck stays on the track. Anyway, to avoid thread drift and otherwise rambling, I will stop.

Interesting. The piping looks like the H8 I've seen and from what I can recall, having deleted the listing from my watch list to make room for antique miniature books, the tender is not the one which comes with the H10w. The factory tender has a distinct sort of covering type thingy that I can only gather has to do with the fact that the H10w has an automatic stoker.

It could very well be that the engine was beat up beyond just weathering (and a so-so weathering job at that) and is missing a few detail parts.

I oiled it.
And ran it up a 2% grade that has two double-back S curves.
In such conditions it'll only haul 20 cars of mixed weights and manufactures.

I've been watching some of the brass on E-Bay. Seems to be a i.flux of PRR stuff . Thee have been two. seperate centipeds as well as two M1's. Botb started low ($200 or so) There are several others at "normal" prices.

Cody,

I have seen the #8014 listed with both the standard and the lines west tender. Same is true for the H9. I guess Key has been mixing tenders in the past  :)

Interesting. I own an 8014 with the tender that has the covering type thing and I've been wondering if all I would need to do to make it an H10sa is change some details on the tender as the H10w is a stoker fed version, and of course the H10sa is superheated.

I always check the Brass Imports page every few days to see what's new and what still hasn't sold.
